MISSOURI’S KYLE GIBSON EARNS PITCHING ACCOLADE

MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)­ released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending March 15, today. UAB junior catcher Digger Towe was named National Hitter of the Week, while Missouri junior right-handed pitcher Kyle Gibson was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

NCBWA/D3baseball.com Top 25

MINNEAPOLIS – The D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 poll was released on March 17 and Salisbury University fell from the top spot to No. 2 after being the nation’s top-ranked team for three weeks. The Sea Gulls (14-2, 5-2 Capital Athletic Conference) received seven first-place votes and 589 points this week.

Texas-Tyler senior second baseman Brock Lemire ( Nederland, TX / NHS) went 12-for-19 with three home runs, one double and 12 RBIs over a 5-1 week that included an East Division sweep of East Texas Baptist. Lemire also walked six times, scored eight runs, stole one base and struck out only once for the nationally-ranked Patriots.

NCBWA Division II National Poll — 3/17/09

Allendale, Mich. – The Grand Valley State baseball team (16-2) is ranked #1 in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll that was released Tuesday (March 17). The Lakers received six first-place votes and 316 total points. The #1 ranking in the poll is Lakers’ first-ever seat atop a collegiate baseball poll.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Penn’s Jeremy Maas (Alpharetta, Ga.) perfected his swing in Florida and went on an absolutely torrid pace to lead the Quakers during the Spring trip, hitting .516 for the week – ending the trip with a .524 for average on the season. This week, the sophomore had multi-hit games in all but one contest, with three hits in three of the seven games played. He has at least one hit in all ten of the team’s games this season. Six of his 16 hits were doubles, and nine total went for extra bases. In Sunday’s game against Georgetown, Maas hit a three-run home run in the second inning to blow open a 2-0 game and pace Penn to a 5-0 lead that turned into a 9-5 win. For the season, Maas has a slugging pct. of .881 and an on-base pct. of .523 for an OPS of 1.404.

UT-Tyler Scores Eight in 8th to Top East Texas Baptist

The University of Texas at Tyler baseball team scored eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on Monday night at Irwin field to rally and beat East Texas Baptist, 8-7.

The win completed UT Tyler’s three-game sweep of the Tigers in its first conference series of the season.

The UC Riverside Baseball Team completed the three-game sweep of the Columbia Lions with a 15-5 win at the Riverside Sports Complex Sunday afternoon. Carl Uhl drove in five runs on the day and Tony Nix extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a fourth-inning double. The win is the fifth straight for the Highlanders (14-3) and 11th in the past 12 games.

WACO, Texas — Landis Ware’s bases-loaded single through a drawn-in, five-man infield in the bottom of the 10th gave ninth-ranked Baylor an 8-7 victory over third-ranked Texas A&M in Monday night’s series finale at Baylor Ballpark. Baylor (11-4, 1-2 Big 12) snapped a six-game losing streak to Texas A&M (13-5, 2-1 Big 12) with its fifth last-at-bat victory of the season.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The University of Northern Iowa baseball team matched a school record for runs scored in a 28-17 rout of Indiana Monday afternoon at Chain O’Lakes Park.

Travis Bennett, James Dinizo and Levi Ferguson each tallied five hits to help the Panthers finish with 28 hits. Dinizo also finished with six RBIs and four runs scored, and Bennett finished with five RBIs and five runs scored. Matt Browning, James Madison Jr., OF, Mystic, Conn./Fitch

Browning batted .647 (11-17) with three doubles, a homer, seven runs scored and four RBI in JMU’s five games last week.
