Arizona State Baseball Sweeps Away Arizona With A 23-9 Victory

TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 4 Arizona State University baseball team scored a season-high 23 runs on Sunday, as the Sun Devils defeated Arizona 23-7 to complete a three-game sweep of the Wildcats. A third consecutive sellout crowd of 4,371 fans at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark saw the Sun Devils improve to 17-3 overall, 3-0 in the Pac-10, on the season.

It was ASU’s first three-game sweep of Arizona since 2003, and the 23 runs were the most by a Sun Devil team since March 17, 2007, when they beat Maine 23-2.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Nate Freiman and Jeremy Gould each drove in three runs, and Will Piwnica-Worms mashed his first career home run to lead Duke to a 10-9 win and a series victory over No. 1 North Carolina Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.

Freiman and Gould each went 2-for-5 and combined for five RBI as part of a seven-run second inning for Duke (14-7, 5-4 ACC). Piwnica-Worms knocked out three hits and scored twice while accounting for the other two runs in Duke’s big second inning with his first career home run. LAWRENCE, Kan. – Sophomore Brian Heere went 2-for-4 and scored the winning run on a Buck Afenir sacrifice fly, while Lee Ridenhour pitched 6 2/3 solid innings as Kansas completed a three-game sweep of No. 1 Texas, 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark. The sweep is the first over a top-ranked team in Jayhawk baseball history.

KU improves to 13-7 overall and 3-0 in Big 12 play, while Texas falls to 14-6 and 2-4 in conference play. Prior to this weekend, the Jayhawks had never swept the Longhorns in a three game series, and hadn’t won three consecutive games against Texas.

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – McNeese State tied a season high by collecting 21 hits in a 17-7 eight inning Southland Conference victory over TAM-Corpus Christi on Sunday.

The victory was the second in three games by the Cowboys over the Islanders. They go to 11-10 overall and to 3-6 in league play while the Islanders are now 7-16 and 1-8.

SEARCY, Ark. – The 28th-ranked Ouachita Baptist University baseball team suffered its fourth straight Gulf South Conference West Division loss Saturday, falling 4-2 to Harding at Jerry Moore Field.

The Tigers (21-11 overall, 0-4 GSC West) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Ouachita took advantage of a error as Blake Lockwood scored on a JoeDan Poulter double to left.

Cal Poly Mustangs Explode for 16 Hits in 15-3 Win over CA ST Bakersfield

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – One day after being held to five hits in a 6-2 victory, No. 16 Cal Poly exploded for 16 hits en route to a 15-3 triumph over Cal State Bakersfield in the second game of a four-game non-conference baseball series Saturday afternoon before 1,063 in Baggett Stadium.

The Mustangs’ fourth straight win improved their record to 13-4 while Cal State Bakersfield, fielding a baseball team for the first time this season, slipped to 4-12. The series shifts to Hardt Field in Bakersfield for games Sunday at 1 p.m. and Monday at 2 p.m.

Cal Baseball Defeats Stanford, 7-6, to Open Pac-10 Play

BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of California baseball team – behind home runs from Brett Jackson and Dylan Tonneson, and stellar relief pitching from Michael Bugary and Blake Smith – defeated Bay Area rival Stanford, 7-6, Saturday in the Pac-10 opener at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved their record to 11-7 (1-0), while the Cardinal dropped to 3-9 (0-1). Cal also got strong hitting efforts from sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn (2-for-4, two RBI) and senior third baseman Michael Brady (2-for-3, two doubles, RBI). [READ MORE]

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Northwestern dropped a pair of games to New Mexico Saturday, falling in a 16-12 shootout in the opening contest before dropping the nightcap 10-6 at Isotopes Park. The Wildcats jumped out to an early four-run lead in the second contest but were unable to hold on.

UIC Scores Early, Often In Pair Of Wins Over Cleveland St

CHICAGO- The University of Illinois Chicago baseball team scored a combined 33 runs and pounded out a combined 25 hits to sweep a doubleheader over Cleveland State at Les Miller Field on Saturday.

The Flames (6-12, 3-0 Horizon League) won the first game 15-5 before taking the nightcap by a final of 18-2. The twinbill sweep also gave UIC a sweep of the league-opening three-game series against the Vikings (3-13, 0-3 Horizon League).

Andy Leonard went 5-for-10 with four doubles and four RBI during the doubleheader, while Brandon Harwell was 3-for-5 with a homer, three RBI and four walks on the day. Read the rest of this entry »

MALIBU, Calif. – Chicago State baseball managed to split a doubleheader with No. 17 Pepperdine Saturday at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu, Calif., winning the first game by a score of 6-4 before dropping an 11-1 decision in the second contest. The Cougars improved to 2-20 on the season, while the Waves brought their season record to 15-6.
