Game 1: Dartmouth 14 Penn 8 (7 innings)
Game 2: Dartmouth 9 Penn 6

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Trailing by five in the final inning of game one, Dartmouth rallied to tie the game, then added six more in the extra frame to down host Penn in the first Ivy game of the season at Meiklejohn Stadium on Saturday afternoon, 14-8. Backed by a solid start from junior Ben Murray (Grants Pass, Ore.), the Big Green (3-9, 2-0 Ivy) completed the doubleheader sweep with a 9-6 triumph in game two. The victories were the first for Dartmouth at Penn (10-9, 0-2 Ivy) since a doubleheader sweep in 2001.

With the score 8-3 in the seventh (and final) inning in the opener, Dartmouth went to work with the bats. Senior Jonathon Santopadre (Vacaville, Calif.) doubled to start the uprising and freshman Joe Sclafani (Palm City, Fla.) singled him to third. After a strikeout, junior Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) brought home the first run of the frame with a single to right. Senior Mike Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.) also delivered an RBI single to get the Big Green within three runs, but Penn starter Todd Roth got the second out on a force at second. Down to the last out, junior Jim Wren (Granbury, Texas) was unphased by the pressure and drove a 1-1 offering out of the park to left-center, his first of the season, tying the game at eight.

Game 1: Yale 6 Princeton 0 (7 innings)
Game 2: Princeton 9 Yale 3

PRINCETON, N.J. – Three of the Yale baseball team’s four victories in the early stages of the 2009 season came on the back of a solid performance by the Bulldogs’ starting pitcher. On Saturday afternoon, in the Elis’ Ivy League opening 6-0 win at Princeton, sophomore left-hander Vinny Lally continued that trend with the best pitching performance by a Yale starter to date. The southpaw set down the first 19 Tigers he faced in order, falling just two outs shy of a perfect game in the seven inning affair, en route to tossing a nine strikeout, complete game shutout. Princeton salvaged a split of the twin bill with a 9-3 victory in the nine inning second game.

“Vinny’s performance was one of the best I have seen in my time at Yale,” said John Stuper, the Mazzuto Family Head Coach for Baseball. “He was ahead of virtually every hitter and threw all his off speed stuff for strikes. He was just outstanding.”
