#2 Miami (FL) 13 Florida Atlantic 6

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Four Hurricanes drove in multiple runs – including three RBI from both Vickash Ramjit and Jason Hagerty – and Jason Santana improved to 4-0 on the season as the second-ranked University of Miami baseball team picked up a convincing 13-6 win over FAU Wednesday night at FAU Stadium.

Tied 3-3 after four, Miami (19-5) pulled away in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs in the frame to essentially put the game out of reach. On the night, UM out-hit FAU, 15-to-6, while the first four hitters in the Hurricanes’ lineup scored 10 of the team’s 13 runs.

For the second straight week, Santana (4-0) turned in a solid outing, allowing three runs on just three hits while walking two and striking out three in 5 2/3 innings. Sam Robinson, Michael Rudman, John Housey and Kevin Youst combined to throw the final 3 1/3 innings.

Charlotte 2 #5 North Carolina 1

Chapel Hill, N.C. – Following a four-hit shutout at Winthrop Tuesday night, the Charlotte 49ers pitching staff held No. 5 North Carolina to just three hits and sophomore first baseman Ryan Rivers (Baltimore, Md. / Eastern Technical HS) belted two towering home runs for all of the offense needed for the 2-1 win at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill Wednesday evening in college baseball action.

Charlotte is 14-6, winning the last three road games, dropping North Carolina to 18-5.

The two teams started the game nearly 90 minutes earlier than originally scheduled due to rains coming into the area. The game was played in a constant drizzle.

It was the first win for Charlotte in Chapel Hill since April 20, 1988, but the second road victory in two seasons for Charlotte at a top-five opponent after winning 11-2 on March 5 at No. 3 South Carolina last season.

#21 Virginia 7 Towson 5

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 8 Virginia baseball team held off a late Towson surge to post a 7-5 win Wednesday in a soggy contest at Davenport Field. Eight of the nine Virginia starters notched hits in the game as the Cavaliers improved on the best record in the nation (21-2).

Four Cavaliers recorded a pair of hits – David Coleman (So., Richmond, Va.), John Hicks (Fr., Sandy Hook, Va.) and Jarrett Parker (So., Stafford, Va.) and Steven Proscia (Fr., Suffern, N.Y.). UVa had a dozen hits as a team.

Tyler Wilson (So., Midlothian, Va.) earned the win for Virginia and improved to 4-1 this year after firing 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. UVa starting pitcher Jeff Lorick (Jr., Duluth, Ga.) tossed 4.2 innings, allowing two earned runs, four hits and two walks while striking out two.

#22 Florida State 11 Florida Gulf Coast 9

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State (13-8) needed runs in just two innings Wednesday night to take an 11-9 victory over Florida Gulf Coast (13-10) completing the two-game, mid-week series sweep of the Eagles on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. The 22nd-ranked Seminoles rallied twice on Wednesday night scoring eight runs in the fifth and three in the eighth to win their third straight contest.

Three Seminoles registered multiple hits in the win including sophomore Tyler Holt who went 2-for-4 and now has 13 multiple hit games through the first 21 contests. Stephen Cardullo and Jack Posey each left the yard for the Seminoles in game two. Cardullo finished the evening with two hits, while tying a career-high with three RBI. Posey registered his third three-RBI game of the season and fourth of his career in Wednesday night’s victory.

Florida State once again used a late inning rally to secure their fourth win in the last five games. Down by one entering the eighth, the Seminoles got the first two batters on base with singles by Mike McGee and Cardullo. Pinch hitter Ruairi O’Connor recorded a successful sacrifice down the first base line, but Eagle reliever Chris Sale (2-3) threw the ball in the dirt allowing McGee to score from third to tie the game at 9-9. The Seminoles then registered back-to-back sacrifice flies by Rafael Lopez and Posey to retake the lead at 11-9.

Holy Cross 8 Boston College 2

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Nick Ciardiello (Edison, N.J.) had a three-run home run and double for five RBI to lead the Holy Cross baseball team to an 8-2 win over Boston College on Wednesday afternoon at Fitton Field. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 6-14 on the season while the Eagles fall to 14-7. The win also marks the first time Holy Cross has beaten Boston College since 1994, when the Crusaders picked up a 9-1 win on May 1, 1994.

In the bottom of the first inning, junior Matt Perry (Sudbury, Mass.) hit a leadoff double to left center field and then scored on a single by junior John Sills (Milton, Mass.). Sills scored on a ground out play by Ciardiello taking a 2-0 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the third, sophomore Eric Oxford (Danvers, Mass.) doubled to right center field and then scored on a double by Ciardiello down the right field line, making the score 3-0. In the bottom of the fourth inning, sophomore Brendan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.) drove in two runners on a triple to center field. With two outs and runners at first and second base, a home run to deep centerfield by Ciardiello put Holy Cross ahead 8-0.

Liberty 17 NC State 5

The Liberty Flames banged out a season-high 23 hits, leading from start to finish, en route to a 17-5 victory over the N.C. State Wolfpack, Wednesday afternoon, at Doak Field.

With a win in Liberty Head Coach Jim Toman’s return to his alma mater as a head coach, the Flames run their record to 16-5 on the season. N.C. State drops to 13-11 overall. In addition, Liberty extends its winning streak to six-straight contests, and the squad has now won 13 out of its last 15 games.

The Flames collected 23 hits in the contest, the most by Liberty this season. The hit total eclipses the 18 hits Toman’s squad had on three other occasions earlier this year.

Maryland 8 UMBC 1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Brett Harman pitched six shutout innings and third baseman Mike Murphy went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run as the University of Maryland baseball team defeated in-state rival UMBC, 8-1, Wednesday evening at Shipley Field.

Harman delivered his second consecutive victorious midweek start. After striking out nine batters in six innings last week against Old Dominion, Harman was in a groove again against the Retrievers (4-10), fanning eight batters in six innings with no walks.

Junior A.J. Casario drove in a run in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single against UMBC starter Marty Zawacki and the Terps (11-12) never trailed.

Zawacki was relieved after two innings of work and then the Terps teed off on UMBC reliever Austin Drewyer in the bottom of the third.
