PHILADELPHIA (3/24/09) – Temple senior Jamie Abercrombie (Ambler, PA / Hatboro-Horsham) and Saint Joseph’s sophomore Dominic Favazza (Ocean Pines, MD / Stephen Decatur) have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in voting conducted by the head coaches and sports information offices.

Abercrombie batted .435 (10-for-23) with five doubles and a home run to lead Temple to a 4-1 week, including a three-game sweep of Duquesne in the conference opening series. The senior drove in seven runs, highlighted by his first career grand slam in a 10-5 win at Lehigh on Tuesday. The Ambler, PA native also moved into eighth place on the all-time hit list at TU with 186, passing former major leaguer Bobby Higginson.

Favazza struck out nine batters in eight innings for SJU in a 3-2 victory over La Salle on Friday in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams. He scattered six hits and allowed one earned run to improve to 1-1. The Hawks swept the Explorers, their first in conference play since 2002, and are off to their best start in the A-10 since 2000.

Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Big 5 will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Monday during the season. The fourth annual All-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
