The College Baseball Blog made the short trek over to Holy Cross to take in a split doubleheader with Holy Cross playing both Yale and Quinnipiac in nine inning games. The Crusaders struggled throughout the day by only gathering 10 hits in the two games as both Yale and Quinnipiac had outstanding pitching on the day.

The first game of the day saw Quinnipiac (3-10) take on the College of the Holy Cross (4-13). The Bobcats sent staff ace Chris Gloor to the mound as he entered the game with an 0-3 record with an ERA in excess of 10 while Holy Cross sent Dan Seip to the mound as he was 0-1.

After a scoreless top of the first inning, Holy Cross came out and took advantage of a lead off walk to Jack Laurendeau who advanced to second on a passed ball before scoring on a John Sills double to left center field. Holy Cross would not be able to get Sills across the plate. Quinnipiac would come back immediately in the top of the second with three runs with the big hit coming on a Mike Marmo double to deep center field.

The game would stay 3-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning when Holy Cross got to Quinnipiac starter Chris Gloor taking advantage of two walks and with two outs in the inning Matt Perry drove both runners home to tie the game up at 3.

Quinnipiac responded in the top of the seventh inning after recording the first out. Ben Farina got on base with a two base error by third baseman Matt Perry who charged a groundball but missed it on his backhand allowing Farina to reach second base. He would not last at second for a long time as Anes Koummal hit a long homer over the left field fence to give the Bobcats a 5-3 lead. QU would tack on another two runs in the eighth inning to set up the final score of 7-3.

The story of the game was Chris Gloor of Quinnipiac who pitched a complete game while allowing only six hits and three earned runs. He ended up striking out 13 batters but walked six. If Gloor cuts down on the walks and continues to get excellent defense behind him then the Bobcats will be tough to beat when the tall lefty takes the mound.

The second game of the day for the Crusaders this time against Yale was similar to Game 1. The Crusaders sent staff ace Bobby Holmes in the nightcap while Yale sent their ace Brandon Josselynn to the hill.

The game would remain scoreless until the second inning when with one out Charlie Neil reached first base on an error by the second baseman. He would advance to second on an errant pickoff throw by Bobby Holmes. The next batter at the plate in Andrew Moore hit a single up the middle scoring Neil with the first run of the game. The score would stay 1-0 until the fourth inning when the Elis put together three hits and knocked Holy Cross starter Bobby Holmes out of the game by scoring four more runs to get a 5-0 lead. Yale would make it 7-0 in the seventh inning when Andrew Kolmar hit a two run double.

Yale’s starter Brandon Josselyn would dominate the Holy Cross hitters through the first six innings by not allowing a hit until the leadoff hitter John Sills in the seventh inning. He hit a chopper down to third baseman Andy Megee who double pumped which allowed Sills to reach base. The official scorer of the game considered this a hit breaking up the no-hitter bid for Josselyn and the Crusaders were able to string together two more hits to put the score at 7-2. Yale would also tack on a run in the eighth inning on three hits to account for all of the scoring in the game.

Josselyn, according to Yale Media Relations, has been receiving some attention from scouts in the early part of the season with his 91-92 MPH fastball and he was impressive today in his seven innings of work while allowing only three hits and two earned runs while walking two batters. His record now goes to 2-2 while Holy Cross starter Bobby Holmes drops his record to 0-4 on the year.
