#9 LSU 2 Northwestern State 1

Sophomore Micah Gibbs drove in the game-winning run on a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead No. 5 LSU past Northwestern State, 2-1, Tuesday in Alex Box Stadium.

Coming in to pinch hit for first baseman Buzzy Haydel with one out and the bases loaded, Gibbs drilled a 2-2 offering into the gap in right center field to break open a 1-1 tie and bring senior Derek Helenihi home for the victory.

LSU improved to 14-4 on the season with the victory, while Northwestern State fell to 10-6 with the loss.

Right-hander Matty Ott (2-1) earned the win in what turned out to be a fantastic game by the LSU pitching staff, which combined to allow only six hits and one earned run. The Demons’ DD Lott (0-1) was charged with the loss.

Minnesota 2 at UT Arlington 6

Senior left-handed pitcher Ryan Robinson pitched eight innings and at one point retired 17 straight batters while leading UT Arlington to a 6-2 victory over No. 25 Minnesota on Tuesday night at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie, Texas.

“I thought we played really well,” head coach Darin Thomas said. “That is the first time in awhile that on a Tuesday we came out and played well. We got some momentum over the weekend and we needed to keep it. Everything always starts on the mound and it was no different tonight.”

After allowing the first two batters of the game to reach base and score on a single and walk respectively, Robinson settled in facing only three batters over the minimum the rest of his eight innings. He finished with a career-high 10 strikeouts and allowed two walks while scattering seven base hits.

“Robinson did a great job after giving up those two early runs,” Thomas said. “He really worked the kinks out and that’s the same guy we saw on the mound last year for us.”

Southeastern Louisiana 5 at Tulane 3

Senior left fielder Brandon Street launched a two-run homer to put the Lions out in front for good and senior right handed pitcher Chris Cappo limited the Green Wave to just two runs on five hits as the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (11-6, 4-2 Southland Conference) rallied to defeat the Tulane Green Wave (11-8) 5-3 on Wednesday night in game one of the 2009 Senator’s Cup Series

After a scoreless opening frame, Tulane struck first with one in the top of the second, as a one-out double and a two-out run scoring single put the Lions down 1-0 after two.

However, Southeastern, which has come-from-behind in every win this season, rallied to take the lead in the third.

After drawing a one-out walk, sophomore center fielder Cass Hargis stole second. Senior second baseman Ty Summerlin then extended his season-best hitting streak to ten games with a single up the middle to score Hargis and tie things up at 1-1.
