PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Penn’s Jeremy Maas (Alpharetta, Ga.) perfected his swing in Florida and went on an absolutely torrid pace to lead the Quakers during the Spring trip, hitting .516 for the week – ending the trip with a .524 for average on the season. This week, the sophomore had multi-hit games in all but one contest, with three hits in three of the seven games played. He has at least one hit in all ten of the team’s games this season. Six of his 16 hits were doubles, and nine total went for extra bases. In Sunday’s game against Georgetown, Maas hit a three-run home run in the second inning to blow open a 2-0 game and pace Penn to a 5-0 lead that turned into a 9-5 win. For the season, Maas has a slugging pct. of .881 and an on-base pct. of .523 for an OPS of 1.404.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Maas’ classmate Paul Cusick (Wilmington, Del.) won his last two starts, this week shutting down Georgetown for three runs (one earned) over 7.1 innings in a 9-4 win over the Hoyas. He struck out six in the win, upping his total to 18 in 16.1 innings over three games. Additionally, when Cusick is on the mound to start, Penn is unblemished on the year, with three wins and zero losses in the early part of the season.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Completing the trifecta in weekly awards for Penn was freshman Trey Jennings (Austin, Texas), who picked up the first win of his collegiate career against Rollins on Wednesday, going 6.1 innings of one-run relief. He came in with Penn trailing, 9-2, and held the tars at bay for the final 6+ innings of the game while Penn mounted a furious comeback for an 11-10 win. He has appeared in three games so far out of the pen, pitching 8.1 innings and allowing just two runs while fanning seven.

THE HONOR ROLL

Harvard’s Taylor Meehan (Simsbury, Conn.) batted .429 in four games for the Crimson in a difficult series against Conference USA’s Alabama-Birmingham while posting a .467 on-base-percentage. The senior second baseman had two hits in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday, hitting a pair of doubles in the nightcap to pace the Crimson.

Cornell’s Nate David (Atlanta, Ga.) had an outstanding series against Santa Clara, going 4-for-11 with three home runs, three runs scored and six runs driven in. After going hitless in three at-bats in the opener, he hit a solo home run in game two on Saturday, then went 3-for-4 with two runs, two home runs and five driven in in Sunday’s series finale.

Geoff Whitaker (Peoria, Ariz.) threw seven terrific innings for Columbia against #27 UC Riverside, allowing just two singles after the first inning. The sophomore right-hander yielded just one earned run against the Highlanders in the second game of Columbia’s 10-game California trip.

Yale senior catcher Davis Stanley (Lexington, Ky.) hit a team-leading .500 in three games this past week. He posted a slugging percentage of .900 with five hits, including a home run and a double, while driving in five runs. In total, Stanley reached base seven times in 12 at-bats for a .583 on-base percentage. He also turned in 27 errorless innings behind the plate. On Tuesday at Davidson, the Yale catcher went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. The next night against the Wildcats, Stanley broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning, belting what proved to be a game-winning two-run home run. After a four-day layoff due to inclement weather, Stanley added another hit to his weekly résumé with a double at Towson on Monday.

Freshman catcher Brandon Lee (Mission Viejo, Calif.) had a hit in his only at-bat of the weekend, coming to the plate with the bases loaded in Cornell’s Sunday 12-10 loss to Santa Clara. The freshman delivered a bases-clearing double in his first collegiate at-bat to close the Big Red’s deficit from 12-7 to 12-10 in the eighth inning.

Columbia’s Mike Roberts (Lynnfield, Mass.) batted .412 on the weekend against two strong pitching staffs in Southern California. The senior posted three multi-hit games in the Lions’ four games this weekend, reaching base in all four games. He is batting .295 this season and is tied for the team lead with six runs scored.
