#2 Texas 3 #10 Rice 6

The Rice baseball team got some solid pitching in surrendering just four hits and shortstop Rick Hague’s two-run homer in the fifth inning gave the Owls’ the lead for good on the way to a 6-3 victory over visiting No. 1 Texas before a rowdy, record-setting crowd of 6,193 Tuesday night at Reckling Park.

Rice freshman starting pitcher Matthew Reckling kept the Longhorns in check for three shutout innings before his teammates struck for the game’s first run in the bottom of the frame. Steven Sultzbaugh led off with a triple to the right-field wall and freshman catcher Craig Manuel followed with an RBI single up the middle for a 1-0 lead.

New Mexico used a 17-hit attack and strong relief pitching to lift the Lobos to a 10-6 win over No. 3 Texas A&M Tuesday evening before 3,404 fans at Olsen Field.

Nebraska 3 #20 Arkansas 7

Redshirt freshman Collin Kuhn had two hits for the 15th-ranked Arkansas baseball team including the game winner in the Razorbacks 7-3 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers Tuesday night at Baum Stadium.

The Razorbacks (13-3) wore green caps with their signature ‘A’ in honor of St. Patrick’s Day and won their fourth straight game while Nebraska (11-6-1) continues a tough road trip where it has lost three of four games starting last Friday.

For the second straight game, Kuhn, the reigning Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week led off with an extra-base hit when he lined a double to right-center field. Two batters later he would come around to score when senior Ben Tschepikow belted a two-run home run to left field, his sixth of the season, and put the Hogs up 2-0.

Texas Tech 5 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 7

Brycen Bell and Martin Parra drove in three runs each to help Texas A&M-Corpus Christi snap its seven-game losing skid with a 7-5 win over Texas Tech on Tuesday night at Whataburger Field.

The loss drops Texas Tech to 8-11 on the season and is the first to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as the Red Raiders came into tonight’s game with a 9-0 record all-time against the Islanders. The Islanders improved to 5-15.

The Red Raiders scratched out their first run of the game in the top of the third inning thanks to a pair of throwing errors by pitcher Andrew Toppert. Toppert committed his first miscue on a routine ball that came back toward the mound off the bat of Garrett Totten and he tried to throw out Michael Reed who was running from first to second. Instead, the ball went sailing into the outfield and Reed slid in safely at second. In the next at-bat, junior shortstop Joey Kenworthy laid down a perfect bunt down the third base line that was fielded by Toppert but his throw went into the dirt at first base and that allowed Reed to score from second.

UTSA 4 Kansas State 6

UTSA scored three runs in the fourth inning to take the lead, but Kansas State battled back to score four over the next three frames and held off a late-inning charge as the Wildcats defeated UTSA, 5-4, Tuesday evening at Tointon Family Stadium. Kansas State improved to 16-3 with the victory, while the Roadrunners fell to 10-7.

The game was relatively low scoring, considering there were five home runs hit in the game, including three by K-State. The three round-trippers by Kansas State improved its season total to 21, including 11 home in the last five games.

K-State was led at the plate by a trio of players in Drew Biery, Carter Jurica and Justin Bloxom, who recorded two hits apiece. The three also combined to tally all five Wildcat RBI on the night.
