SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel catcher Richard Jones has been named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week while College of Charleston starting pitcher Jesse Simpson has been chosen as the league’s Pitcher of the Week for all games from March 9-15.
Jones hit .611 last week as he recorded 11 hits, scored 10 runs and notched 12 RBIs. Six of his 11 hits were extra-base hits as Jones recorded three doubles and three home runs and had 23 total bases to his credit. Jones finished the five-game week with a 1.278 slugging percentage and a .680 on-base percentage while also drawing five walks and one hit by pitch.
The Citadel (8-7, 4-2 SoCon) was 4-1 on the week, including taking two-of-three league games at Appalachian State.
Simpson had a career-high 14 strikeouts in eight innings of work in Charleston’s 9-3 win over Western Carolina on Friday. He walked none and scattered eight hits before leaving with a 9-1 lead. Simpson improved to 3-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.67.
Charleston (13-3, 5-1 SoCon) took two-of-three games from Western Carolina over the weekend to finish the week with a 4-1 mark.
The SoCon’s weekly awards are voted on by the league’s baseball sports information directors.
Other hitters earning consideration for the award were College of Charleston’s Joash Brodin, Elon’s Mike Melillo, Western Carolina’s Brent Greer, Davidson’s Drew Gadaire, Furman’s Marcus Rose, Wofford’s Kyle Behrendt, Georgia Southern’s Jonathan King, UNC Greensboro’s Ed Jayjack and Samford’s Wayne Miller.
Other pitchers nominated were Davidson’s Thomas Middour, Western Carolina’s Garrett Ozar, Furman’s Spencer Hale, UNC Greensboro’s Warren Slack, The Citadel’s Matt Talley, Georgia Southern’s Kyle Kamppi, Elon’s J.D. Reichenbach and Samford’s David Knapp.
