Lamar 8 at Central Arkansas 4

Lamar used a seven-run sixth inning to erase an early deficit and win the deciding game over Central Arkansas, 8-4, at Bear Field on Sunday.

Trailing 2-0 following UCA scores in the third and fourth, including a solo home run by Jonathan Yerby, Lamar benefitted from six singles, two doubles and two of the Bears’ season-high five errors to take a 7-2 lead. A total of 12 Cardinals batted in the inning with eight of the 10 men who batted either scoring or driving in a run.

That was all starter Matison Smith needed as he retired eight-straight Bears at one point en route to improving to 4-0 on the season. He struck out seven in seven innings while allowing five hits.

Freshman designated hitter Cody Gougler extended his hitting streak to ten games while driving in a game-winning run, and senior right hander Ryan Collins picked up a win with 4.0 innings of shutout relief as the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (10-6, 4-2 Southland Conference) finished off a 13-3 suspended game victory before rallying for a 7-5 win to ensure a sweep of the McNeese State Cowboys (9-7, 1-5 SLC) on Sunday.

The three-game sweep of the intrastate rival Cowboys gave the Lions their first series sweep since taking three from Eastern Illinois to open the 2008 season (Feb. 22-24, 2008). The weekend also saw Southeastern claim its first series sweep of a conference foe since taking three from Nicholls State to finish the 2007 season (May 17-19, 2007).

“Our guys did a great job swinging the bats all weekend, and our pitchers did a great job keeping us in the game against a very strong offensive club,” head coach #Jay Artigues# said. “This win was important. The Southland Conference season is going to be competitive every weekend, so I’m pleased that our guys kept their foot on the gas all weekend long, because we can’t let up during the conference season.”

Sam Houston State 17 at Texas State 10

Led by first baseman Nick Zaleski who totaled six RBIs in the contest, Sam Houston State rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth to tie and eight more in the 10th inning to defeat Texas State-San Marcos 17-10 in a Southland Conference baseball game at Bobcat Field Sunday.

Sam Houston split with the Bobcats Saturday, giving the Bearkats two of three wins in the SLC series and upping SHSU’s league mark to 5-1 and the Kats’ season record to 13-5.

Second baseman Braeden Riley went 5-for-7 at the plate to lead a Sam Houston team that totaled 20 hits in the game. For the weekend, Riley went 11-for-17 against the Bobcats.

UT Arlington knocked off UTSA 3-2 in 10 innings during the third game of its Southland Conference series on Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark to win the conference series over the Roadrunners. The Mavericks (7-10, 2-4 SLC) bounced back to win the series after the Roadrunners (10-6, 3-3 SLC) claimed a 3-2 win in the first game of the doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

“I thought we really pitched well,” head coach Darin Thomas said. “All three starters did a good job this weekend. Jason Mitchell came out of the bullpen twice, and Matt Otteman came out of the bullpen well today. We also did a good job battling at the plate against a good pitching staff.”

Sophomore Rett Varner and junior Jason Mitchell combined to throw 10 innings, allowing six hits and zero earned runs (two runs) against the Roadrunners in the nightcap while forcing UTSA to strand nine base runners.
