Senior SS Jeremiah Sammy hit his first career home run and drove in a career-high three runs on Saturday.

Lamar 9 at Central Arkansas 4
Senior shortstop Jeremiah Sammy reached base three times, drove in a career-high three RBI and hit his first career home run to lead Lamar past Central Arkansas, 9-4, at Bear Stadium Saturday.

While Sammy was doing his damage out of the seven spot in the lineup, Lamar’s top five batters in the order – Tyler Link, Brian Taylor, Steven Tucker, Chris Dunkin and Brent Harris – for 11 hits and the Cardinals’ other six RBI.

Lamar (14-4, 4-2 Southland) pounded out 14 hits against four UCA pitchers, including Sammy’s 2-run blast in the second inning. Lamar scored two runs in the second, third, fifth and seventh innings, and added an insurance run in the eighth.

UCA (10-5, 4-1 SLC) managed only seven hits off a combination of freshman Eric Harrington, winner James Brandhorst (1-0) and senior closer Brian Needham. That trio combined to strike out nine.

Senior catcher Mark Wyatt blasted a three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to power Sam Houston to a 7-5 come-from-behind victory over Texas State-San Marcos in the first game of a Southland Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats bounced back for a 6-3 victory in the nightcap to split in the doubleheader. The third and deciding game of the weekend series will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

The Bearkats trailed 5-3 going into the top of the eighth in the first contest. Senior third baseman Seth Hammock, who went 2-for-3 in the game, picked up one of three RBIs to cut the margin to 5-4 before Wyatt’s three-run blast.

Senior Andy Sauter pitched eight innings with a career-high nine strikeouts to lead UT Arlington (6-9, 1-3) to its first Southland Conference victory of the season with a 5-3 win over UTSA (9-5, 2-2) on Saturday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark in Arlington.

Catcher Chad Comer drove in the tying run with a two-out single in the sixth inning before center fielder Michael Choice scored the eventual game-winning run with a full-count, two-out single up the middle in the seventh inning. Junior Jason Mitchell pitched the ninth inning to pick up his first career save as the Mavericks won game one of the series against the Roadrunners.

“With our team it is going to start on the mound,” head coach Darin Thomas said. “After we got behind 2-0 in the first inning, Andy really gutted it up and carried us with nine strikeouts. He brought us to the ninth inning with a lead and that is all we can ask of him.”
