CAA Players of the Week (March 10th)

CAA BASEBALL Co-PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Gary Helmick, Towson

Sr., 2B, Severn Md./Northeast

Helmick batted .611 (11-for-18) with seven runs scored in Towson’s four games at the Florida Gulf Coast Classic. The senior second baseman had three 3-hit games from the leadoff spot and extended his season-opening hitting streak to eight games.

CAA BASEBALL Co-PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

David Herbek, James Madison

So., SS, Haymarket, Va./Battlefield

Herbek batted .524 (11-for-21) with six runs scored and 12 RBI to lead JMU to a 4-1 week. The sophomore shortstop had two doubles, a triple and a homer, and hit a game-winning RBI single in Saturday’s victory over Lafayette. Herbek is riding a 14-game hitting streak.

CAA BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK:

Turner Phelps, James Madison

So., RHP, Roanoke, Va./Lord Botetourt

Phelps pitched a complete-game, one-hit shutout as JMU blanked Lafayette 5-0 last Saturday. The sophomore allowed only an infield single in the sixth and struck out eight over seven frames. Phelps is 2-0 this season and a perfect 10-0 in his career.

CAA BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:

Matt Miller, Northeastern

Fr., OF, Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury

Miller batted .500 (7-for-14) with five runs scored from the leadoff spot as Northeastern went 3-1 in four games last week. The freshman outfielder doubled twice and also drew six walks for an on-base percentage of .650.
