GREENSBORO, N.C. – Boston College’s Tony Sanchez has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Miami’s Kyle Bellamy picked up Pitcher of the Week honors following their performances in league-opening series last weekend.

Sanchez, a junior catcher from Miami, Fla., powered a Boston College offense that exploded in the last two games at No. 6 Florida State, leading the Eagles to two wins at Dick Howser Stadium and helping BC becoming the first team to ever take an ACC opening weekend series from the Seminoles.

Sanchez went 7-for-9 in the final two games to pace BC. He batted .833 (5-for-6) with runners on third and less than two outs on the week. Sanchez’s on-base-percentage was .640, while his slugging percentage was 1.000. Sanchez leads the ACC this season in hits (25) and RBI (19), is second in home runs (4) and total bases (43), fourth in runs (18), fifth in on-base percentage (.545), sixth in slugging (.782) and seventh in doubles (6) and batting average (.455).

Bellamy, a junior from Davie, Fla., played a crucial role in two of Miami’s four victories on the week, picking up a win on Friday and a save on Sunday in the Hurricanes’ series sweep of NC State. On the week, Bellamy held his opponents scoreless in three outings, allowing just three hits while striking out 12 in 5.1 relief innings.

Bellamy tied career-highs for innings pitched (3.0) and strikeouts (6) as he tossed the final three innings in Miami’s 12-inning, 7-6 win over NC State on Saturday. He then converted his fourth save of the season in a 9-7 win on Sunday, coming on in the eighth to get the Hurricanes out of a jam with a bases-loaded strikeout before fanning out two more in the ninth to secure the series sweep.

In mid-week play, Bellamy went one inning in relief against Mount St. Mary’s, striking out the only three batters he faced. On the season, Bellamy (1-0) has converted all four of his save opportunities and had yet to allow an earned run in six appearances. In 8.2 innings thus far, Bellamy has struck out 18 and has allowed just five hits while holding his opponents to a .152 batting average.
