Central Arkansas 6 at Stephen F. Austin 4

The SFA baseball team scored a pair of runs in the ninth inning to tie the game, but Central Arkansas answered with two runs in the top of the 10th to complete a conference-opening, three-game sweep of the ‘Jacks, 6-4, at Jaycees Field on Sunday.

SFA (3-9, 0-3 SLC) left 14 runners on base on Sunday, nullifying a pair of late-inning rallies that it put together. The ‘Jacks were down to their last strike twice in the ninth inning, but delivered four straight two-out hits to knot things up off of UCA (9-3, 3-0 SLC) stopper Bobby Pritchett.

However, UCA scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th before it even collected its first hit of the inning on a pair of one-out walks, a near-miss double play and a passed ball.

Nicholls State 1 at Lamar 8

Lamar scored two runs in the first inning and the first eight overall in defeating Nicholls State, 8-1, and winning the SLC opening series for both teams at Vincent-Beck Stadium Sunday.

Lamar (12-2, 2-1 SLC) won its third-consecutive weekend series and its 17th in its last 20 dating back to the 2005 season. Nicholls falls to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Tyler Link went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Steven Tucker went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run. Matison Smith (3-0) struck out four in 6.2 innings while scattering four hits to earn his third-consecutive win.

Link opened the game by crushing a 1-2 fastball over the second wall in left field to put the Cardinals on the board. Quentin Luquette followed with a single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and came home on a fielding error by shortstop Stephen Gauthe.

Southeastern Louisiana 9 at UTSA 8

Six Lion batters recorded multi-hit games as part of a 14 hit attack and the Lion bullpen held on to quell a late rally as the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (7-5, 1-2 Southland Conference) rallied for a win over the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners (8-4, 2-1 SLC) by a 9-8 margin on Sunday to pick up their first conference win and avoid a sweep at the hands of the defending SLC champions.

Freshman right hander Josh Janway threw 5.0 innings and allowed just two earned runs to a UTSA lineup that scored 25 runs in the first two games of the series. The Baton Rouge native and Parkview Baptist product improved to 3-0 in his first weekend start.

The Lions got on the board first as sophomore center fielder Cass Hargis led off the top of the first by getting hit by a pitch. After stealing second, Hargis came around to score on a two-out single by sophomore catcher Josh Cryer as Southeastern jumped out to an early 1-0 lead.

UT Arlington 5 at Sam Houston State 7
The Sam Houston State baseball team scored two runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh inning to come back and defeat UT Arlington 7-5 to complete the three-game series sweep over the Mavericks on Sunday afternoon at Don Sanders Stadium in Huntsville, Texas.

UT Arlington broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth inning with a three-run home run over the left-field fence by senior Ryan Davis to give the Mavericks the lead.

The Mavericks didn’t hold the lead for long as Sam Houston State used two two-run homers to regain the lead, with Nick Zaleski and Seth Hammock hitting homers in the sixth and seventh innings respectively, to give the lead back to the Bearkats. SHSU tied the score at 4-4 on a double by Braeden Riley before Hammock’s towering homer to left field gave the Bearkats the lead for good.

Purdue 10 at Texas State 14

Junior first baseman Paul Goldschmidt added a second set of home runs against Purdue Sunday afternoon and the Texas State baseball team scored runs in all but two innings to complete a three-game sweep over the Boilermakers at Bobcat Field.

Texas State improves to 9-3 on the season after taking its second-straight weekend sweep and will look to use the momentum Tuesday night when they face No. 18 TCU, who boasts a 9-2 record.

Like the first two games, Texas State pounded away at the plate to take the early lead with a four-run margin over two innings. Goldschmidt belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the first, scoring the leadoff pair of Tyler Sibley and Bret Atwood for the edge.

UT Pan American 9 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3

After a rough start for UTPA, the Broncs (1-11) earned their first win of the season as they defeated the Islanders 9-3 this Sunday (Mar. 8) afternoon at the Whataburger College Classic at Whataburger Field.

“This is the first win of many here at Pan Am,” said head coach Manny Mantrana. “Going into the ninth I thought the same thing going into the first – throw strikes and get outs.”

The Broncs were off to another early start against TAMUCC as they put a run on the board in the third as Abraham Garcia singled towards the leftfield line bringing home Andrew Perez.

UTPA put up another run in the fifth as right-fielder Jose Salmon scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Perez. The Broncs did allow the Islanders to put up one run in the bottom of the fifth as catcher Stephen Flora homered to left center.
