FRISCO, Texas – McNeese State shortstop Shon Landry has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week and Northwestern State right-hander Jimmy Heard has been named the Southland Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Landry was 14-for-25 (.560) with nine runs batted in and seven runs scored. The senior from Orange, Texas, was 10-for-16 (.625) with six RBI in the Cowboys’ three-game sweep of Louisiana Tech. Landry is riding a seven-game hit streak and has helped McNeese State to a 7-1 record to start the season.

Heard came one strikeout away from tying a school record when he recorded 14 strike outs while tossing eight shutout innings in a 16-0 Northwestern State win over Houston Baptist last Friday. Heard gave up just five hits and only walked one batter in throwing 115 pitches. He let one batter get past second base and three batters past first base. He retired nine in a row between the second and fifth innings in picking up his first win of the season. Northwestern State is 5-3 this season after a three-game sweep of Houston Baptist last weekend.

Honorable mention for hitter of the week goes to Lamar outfielder Tyler Link, Sam Houston State third baseman Seth Hammock and Southeastern Louisiana left fielder Brandon Street. Honorable mention for pitcher of the week goes to Texas State’s Brian Borski, UT Arlington’s Nathan Long, Lamar’s Eric Harrington, UTSA’s Clay Schrader and Stephen F. Austin’s Chris Court. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland baseball sports information contacts.

Each school’s SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
