Houston 3 vs #3 Texas A&M 5

Missouri 5 at #6 Arizona State 2

Missouri concluded its nine-game road trip to open the 2009 season by picking up a 5-2 win over Arizona State on Sunday in Tempe, Ariz. The win snaps a seven-game losing streak for the Tigers.

The game was called after eight innings due to travel arrangements. A three-hour time limit was placed on the game prior to first pitch.

Arizona State got on the board first with a run in the fourth inning, getting three-straight singles to start the inning. After a walk loaded the bases with no outs, Tepesch stuck out two and got a foul out to limit the damage.

#20 Baylor 3 vs #9 Rice 8
The Rice baseball team posted double-digit hits and got a solid start on the mound from freshman starter Taylor Wall for an 8-3 win over longtime rival Baylor on Sunday’s final day of action at the Houston College Classic downtown at Minute Maid Park. The Owls wrapped-up the three-game weekend as the only unbeaten team (3-0) in the tournament.

Wall put the Owls in position to win with 6.1 innings of work. The freshman left-hander from Westside High School scattered three hits and two walks while registering a career-high eight strikeouts. He allowed just one run against a Baylor team that is ranked as high as No. 6 in the nation. Wall has in fact allowed only one run in his last 9.1 innings dating back to a relief outing against crosstown rival Houston last Wednesday (Feb. 25)

Kansas State 5 at San Diego State 4
Kansas State gave up a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, but the Wildcats came back with a run in the 10th and held San Diego State in the bottom half as the Wildcats picked up a 5-4 victory Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

With the win, the Wildcats improved to 5-2 on the season after finishing the four-day weekend with a 3-1 record. San Diego State fell to 4-4.

For the second-straight Sunday, Kansas State was up by one run heading into the final inning and relinquished the lead, but this time the Wildcats held came back with a run in the top of the 10th and held SDSU in the bottom half to pick up their first extra-inning win of the season.

Nebraska 2 vs Missouri State 3 FINAL

The Missouri State baseball team used solid pitching and timely hitting to finish the Sam Houston Baseball Classic with a 2-2 record by defeating Nebraska by a 3-2 score Sunday morning in Huntsville, Texas.

MSU improved to 2-5 on the season, while Nebraska fell to 5-3-1.

The Bears broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when Zak Swyhart laced a two-out single to left to score Curt Courtwright. Ben Carlson followed with an RBI single to plate Kevin Medrano for a 2-0 MSU lead. The Bears nearly added to that advantage, but Husker right fielder D.J. Belfonte robbed Chris Playter of an RBI hit with a sliding catch to end the inning.

Texas Tech 2 at Cal State Northridge

After overpowering the Texas Tech Red Raiders (5-4) for the first two games of the series, the Cal State Northridge Matadors (4-3) needed two runs in the ninth to complete a three-game sweep by a score of 3-2 Sunday afternoon.

Down by a run to start the ninth, Matador left fielder Richard Cates provided the first blow by driving in center fielder Jeff Pruitt with his double to left field with two outs in the ninth. Next, third basemen Ryan Pineda would provide the winning blow as he raked a single to right field bringing in catcher John Parham with the winning run.

“I made a slight adjustment from the last time I was up,” said Cates. “That last at bat I was looking for a fastball.”
