Breaking News: Vermont drops Baseball and Softball

The Vermont Athletic Department put out a release today dropping the Baseball and Softball programs at the end of the season. This will impact five staff members and most importantly 43 student athletes who will lose their ability to play their respective sport. Baseball head coach Bill Currier is entering his 22nd season in charge of the Catamount program. I am currently trying to get a comment from Currier about the program being discontinued. Tigers to open new Box against Villanova tonight

For the LSU baseball program, the first day of a highly anticipated future arrives today with the debut of a state-of-the-art stadium.

At the same time, the Tigers bring proud echoes from the past with them into the 2009 season, the residual impact of a memorable finish to last season that LSU rode all the way to its home away from home for the first time in four years.

The Tigers’ new home, the sparkling, new Alex Box Stadium, will be officially unveiled today when LSU entertains Villanova to start a three-game season-opening series. Read the rest of this entry »

Opening Day

It has been a long journey over the last eight months but here we are again with Opening Day of college baseball upon us. We already have one game in the books with Florida Gulf Coast defeating Central Michigan 4-3 behind a Brad Roberts eighth inning triple to drive in the winning run. (Full Recap available here.)

There are many questions around College Baseball this season. Does the ACC finally end their run of futility at the College World Series? The last title won by an ACC squad was in 1955 when Wake Forest grabbed the title.

ACC Weekend Preview: Feb. 20th-22nd

I will be covering the ACC in depth this season with weekly previews of the weekend ahead. I believe that the ACC is one of the premier conferences in the country even though no team in the conference has won the national championship since 1955 when Wake Forest grabbed the title. The ACC is expected to be won by the North Carolina Tar Heels who are led by two of the best pitchers in the conference with Alex White and Matt Harvey. Southland Conference Opening Weekend Series Preview

The 2009 baseball season begins Friday with 11 of the 12 Southland Conference teams in action. Texas State is the first conference team to play Friday, meeting Arkansas State in the UT Arlington/Hilton Invitational at 11 a.m., CDT. Stephen F. Austin, the lone league team not opening its season on Friday, tosses out its first pitch Saturday at 7 p.m. at Louisiana-Monroe at the ULM Warhawk Classic. Saturday’s Southland schedule features four doubleheaders. Lamar, Sam Houston State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTSA all have a twin bill scheduled. All 12 schools are in action on Sunday.

Big 12 Opening Weekend Series Preview

With the Baseball Season finally here-here are the match ups on the teams in the Big 12. Baylor will be hosting Pacific in a 3 game series at the Baylor Ball Park. The Kansas Jayhawks will be taking part in the Service Academies Spring Classic, Millington, TN. Kansas State will be headed to Houston, Texas to take on Houston Cougars in a weekend series. Missouri is headed to the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix, Ariz where they will be playing Nevada and Gonzaga. Nebraska will be traveling to Louisiana-Lafayette in a four game set.
