UH coach Rayner Noble

A pair of Conference USA coaches reached significant milestones during the opening weekend of the 2009 season. Houston head coach Rayner Noble posted his 500th win as the Cougars skipper, moving his all-time record to 500-359 (.582) as he begins his 15th season at UH. Tulane’s Rick Jones became the school’s all-time winningest coach on Sunday with his 642nd career victory. Jones, who will coach Team USA this summer, broke former baseball coach Joe Brockhoff’s record, which stood at 641 wins since Brockhoff’s retirement following the 1993 season. The Takeaway a show on public radio recently talked about the Racial makeup of college baseball players. It is an interesting show as they bring in a lot of different panelists who have an opinion on the topic. I think the main reason why we don’t see more African-Americans playing college baseball is the use of showcase camps which kids from an urban background struggle to afford. Injuries hamper Texas Tech’s 4-0 start

For the first time since 2005, Texas Tech started the season with 4 straight victories. Pitchers A.J. Ramos and Miles Morgan returned from injury with incredible results, but 2B Willie Rueda and C Jeremy Mayo were struck by injuries that could limit them for the next couple of weeks. CBB Scoreboard for Feb. 24th

There was only one game today involving a ranked squad where the Baylor Bears took on the BYU Cougars. CBB Visit: Checking out Gerrit Cole’s First Start

coleLOS ANGELES, Calif. – After being criticized for months, Gerrit Cole let his arm do the talking Saturday.

Much was made about Cole’s decision to attend UCLA after his selection in the first round of last June’s MLB Draft. Most of the scrutiny came from the New York Yankees, the team that took him with the 28th-overall pick, and their fans after the former AFLAC All-American hurler failed to sign without ever listening to offers.

Instead, the right-hander from Santa Ana, Calif. passed on the millions and decided college was a better option. And if his performance Saturday against UC Davis was any indication, he made the right choice. Read the rest of this entry »

Feb. 23 NCBWA Division I Baseball Poll

NCBWA LogoDALLAS – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continues its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 12th year with its 2009 weekly surveys. Weekly polls will be circulated from Feb. 23-June 25 following the NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb.

The poll voters come from 30 college baseball writers and related media persons from throughout the nation. This week’s poll has representation by 12 different conferences among the 302 baseball-playing schools in the 2009 NCAA Division I ranks. CBB Players of the Week for Feb. 24th

CAA Weekend Roundup for Feb. 20th-22nd

CAA LogoTen of the eleven CAA teams were in action this weekend in  non- conference games. Here’s a quick run down of each team.

-George Mason started the year  4-0 for just the third time in school history. The Patriots competed in the Courtyard by Marriott Baseball Classic in Spartanburg, S.C.  Righty Kevin Crum (1-0 0.00) and second baseman Ryan Soares (.500-1-4) were named the all-tournament team.

-UNC Wilmington started the season off with a three game sweep of Maryland at home.   Outfielder Grayson Evans (.417) had 7 RBI in the series. Read the rest of this entry »

LOS ANGELES – Derek Legg scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the ninth Sunday while Charlie Ruiz threw 1 2/3 perfect innings in relief as the Long Beach State 49ers beat the USC Trojans, 5-4, at Dedeaux Field. Big South Announces Baseball Players of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Winthrop catcher John Murrian (Summerville, S.C.) has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Baseball Player of the Week, while Coastal Carolina redshirt-junior Austin Fleet (Edmond, Okla.) has been named New Balance Pitcher of the Week for games played the opening weekend of the 2009 season, it was announced today by the League office.
