Construction Continues on McLane Baseball Stadium

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Despite harsh winter conditions, construction continues to move along on the new McLane Baseball Stadium as vertical steel supports for the stands were erected last week.

McLane Baseball Stadium is designed for 2,500 seats with 400 chair back seats and 2,100 bench-style seats. Drayton and Elizabeth McLane provided MSU with a $4 million commitment toward the stadium.

The Spartans are scheduled to play their inaugural game at the stadium April 3 against Northwestern.

McNeese State pitching staff is expected to be stronger this season

In a little over a week McNeese State’s baseball team will kickoff its season and Coach Terry Burrows already has a pretty good idea about his pitching staff…..who’s going to be good for starting assignments, who can be counted on for middle relief duty and who for late inning relief.

“One thing is for sure,” he said early in the week. “We’ve got more quality arms. The ones coming back are throwing a lot better and then we’ve also added some good arms.”

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior Dane Grandizio (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) and junior Ben Yoder (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) were named Bucknell baseball team captains recently. The two veteran All-Patriot League players were voted captains by their teammates.

“I am very pleased with the team’s selection of captains,” said Bison head coach Gene Depew, who enters the 2009 campaign two wins shy of 500 in his career. “Both Dane and Ben are outstanding players, but more importantly they are exemplary young men. They both possess a great work ethic to go along with their athletic ability, and that combination makes them successful players. They have rightfully earned the respect of their teammates and I am expecting them to provide leadership for our team this year.”

Senior Lex Wolfe (Lakewood, N.J.) was named as the first American Southwest Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week of the 2009 season by the conference office on Monday.

Wolfe went seven innings in Saturday’s 10-3 win over Trinity, allowing no runs, just four hits and striking out nine batters in the process.

2009 WAC Preseason Poll and Team

DENVER – Fresno State has been selected as the favorite to win the 2009 Western Athletic Conference regular season baseball crown in a vote by the league’s seven head coaches. The coaches also voted on a preseason all-WAC team, and Fresno State placed four players on the team while Hawai‘i, Nevada and New Mexico State each had three. Fresno State junior third baseman Tommy Mendonca was named the preseason player of the year, while Hawai‘i senior Jared Alexander was picked the preseason pitcher of the year. 2009 Sun Belt Preseason Poll and Teams

NEW ORLEANS – After winning its second tournament title and making its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament in five seasons, along with the majority of its line-up returning, Western Kentucky University is expected to top the Sun Belt Conference in 2009, according to a vote by the league’s 11 head coaches. The Hilltoppers veteran ace Matt Ridings has been tabbed Preseason Pitcher of the Year, while ULM’s shortstop Ben Soignier has been selected as the Preseason Player of the Year. There never seems to be a shortage of optimism regarding Rice baseball, and with good reason. Under head coach Wayne Graham, now entering his 18th season at the helm of the program, the Owls have now been to NCAA Regionals 14 years in a row, won or shared a regular season conference championship for 13-straight years, and been to the College World Series in Omaha seven times in the last dozen years.

Big Ten Network releases 2009 Baseball TV Schedule

CHICAGO – The Big Ten Network will nationally televise up to 30 Big Ten baseball games, including the entire Big Ten Baseball Tournament, and 25 Big Ten softball games this spring. Every game will be produced in high definition.

The TCU Horned Frogs have been selected to win their fourth straight regular season Mountain West Conference baseball championship in 2009 in a vote of the seven MWC head coaches and a select media panel. In his sixth season with the Hawkeyes, Iowa Baseball Coach Jack Dahm is looking for the Black and Gold to become a more consistent team and improve last year’s 22-33 record. With an experienced group of players returning and a talented freshmen class, the Hawkeyes are set to continue their improvement in the Big Ten and make a run at a conference title.

UW-Milwaukee 2009 Season Preview

The Milwaukee Panthers had an up-and-down season in 2008, ending with a 25-36 record overall and a fifth-place showing in the Horizon League standings. But, it was the “up” that the season ended on that will be long remembered. Entering the Horizon League Tournament as the No. 5 seed, the Panthers played a special week of baseball, upsetting three different teams on the way to the tournament finale, where they came up just a victory away from their first NCAA Regional since the 2002 season.
