Conway, S.C. – The Bears split a doubleheader against Florida International to kick off the 2009 season on Friday afternoon. CBB Visit: Houston College Classic – Texas A&M v. UC Irvine

The Houston College Classic kicked off Friday with a pair of top ten teams in Texas A&M and UC Irvine squaring off at Minute Maid Park. On what was just an absolutely beautiful day at the ballpark, many fans slipped work and school to support their teams.

Daniel Bibona toed the rubber for UC Irvine and Brooks Raley countered for the Aggies. It was UC Irvine who scratched the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Second baseman Casey Stevenson lead off the inning with a walk, and center fielder Cory Olson laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Stevenson to second base. With two outs, right fielder Sean Madigan ripped a double down the right field line to drive in the first run of the game. Read the rest of this entry »

St Edward’s Hilltoppers split with UT-Permian Basin

AUSTIN, Texas – Bret Friemel’s outstanding performance on the mound in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader with UT-Permian Basin helped St. Edward’s earn a split. The Hilltoppers dropped the first game, 10-4, and claimed victory in the second contest, 3-0.

In game one, UT-Permian Basin (13-4, 10-3 HC) got on the board first. The Falcons scored three runs in the top of the first inning. The big blow came on a two-run home run to right field by designated hitter Chris Hook. Read the rest of this entry »

CBB Spotlight Series: Houston College Classic

It’s that time of year again.  Some of the nation’s best teams flock to Minute Maid Park for the annual Houston College Classic.  This year the loaded field consists of UC Irvine, UCLA, Baylor, Texas A&M, Rice, and Houston.  With five of the six teams ranked in the top 10 of various polls, this has all the makings of a true “classic.”  The College Baseball Blog will be attending some of the games this weekend and have reports on the daily happenings.

Florida State 8 Auburn 7

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Junior transfer Mike Meschke registered the biggest hit of his young Seminole career with a bases loaded, walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to lead fifth-ranked Florida State (5-0) to an 8-7 victory over Auburn (2-3) Thursday night on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. The win kept the Seminoles perfect on the season while extending their win streak against the Tigers to six games.

The Seminoles led by as many as four runs entering the seventh inning before a pair of home runs by Auburn third baseman Joseph Sanders tied the game at seven apiece. Senior Jimmy Marshall (1-0) earned his first victory of the season as he pitched a perfect ninth striking out the side. Read the rest of this entry »

CAA Weekend Preview for Feb. 27th-March 1st

It’s week two of CAA baseball. Here’s a quick rundown of the teams in action this weekend.

-Northeastern will hold its annual scrimmage with the Boston Red Sox Saturday at 1 p.m. in Fort Myers. Check out live updates here.

The Huskies will continue their regular season with a doubleheader Sunday against Northwestern in Winter Haven, Fla.

TEMPE, Ariz. – - No. 15 Mizzou attempted a late rally against Arizona State Thursday night in Tempe, Ariz., but fell short, as the eighth-ranked Sun Devils defeated the Tigers 2-1 on day one of the DeMarini Invitational. The loss extends Missouri’s losing streak to five.

Trailing 2-0 in the ninth inning, MU scored once and had the trying run at third base when the final out was recorded. Junior Greg Folgia and senior Ryan Lollis delivered back-to-back one-out singles. And Folgia scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Aaron Senne. Oklahoma City’s Denney Crabaugh gets 1,000th win

The Oklahoma City Stars defeated Bacone 14-3 today. David Mann went 4-for-5 with a stolen base and three runs scored; LHP Ashur Tolliver got his fourth win of the season.

This win was number 1,000 for Head Coach Denney Crabaugh, who is in his 21st season at Oklahoma City. Details at the Oklahoma City athletics site: OCU’s Crabaugh gets 1,000th career win

Mark Fleury belted a two-run home run, and Garrett Gore and Kyle Seager each doubled and drove in three to help Carolina (4-1) bounce back from its first loss of the season.
