SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference baseball coaches and the voting members of the Southern Conference Sports Media Association have each selected Elon as the preseason favorite to repeat as champion in 2009. A year ago, the Phoenix became the first team in seven seasons to win both the regular season and tournament titles en route to a 44-18 season and a berth in the NCAA Regionals. Air Force Season Preview: First, Third, and Catcher

Air Force’s biggest run producers will man first base. Junior Addison Gentry will get the bulk of the playing time at first with fellow junior Matt Alexander seeing time primarily as the designated hitter. The two, both left-handed hitters, were Air Force’s top home run and RBI producers as sophomores. This year will be no different as both are expected to be the team’s three and four hitters in the lineup.

Gentry had a solid sophomore campaign, leading the team with 19 doubles and 46 RBIs. In addition, Gentry was second with six homers. Developing into a clutch hitter, Gentry led the team with four game-winning RBIs and scored three game-winning runs. As a sophomore, Gentry started 46 games at first and ranked amongst the conference top-10 in putouts and fielding percentage at first. Read the rest of this entry »

The Oregon State baseball team opens its 2009 season at Tennessee on Feb. 20. That’s almost nine months after the Beavers’ last game of 2008 — May 25 against Pacific.

Since that time, head coach Pat Casey and his assistants have gone about piecing together a club that will be charged with making a run at the team’s fourth trip to Omaha in five years.

Defending champion and #1-ranked Lewis-Clark State opens their season hosting a tournament with College of Idaho, Concordia-Portland, Corban, and Patten Feb. 13-16.

#2 Lee started their season 5-0, including a 10-3 win over Tennessee Wesleyan. They host Virginia Intermont Feb. 13-14.

CBB 2009 Patriot League Preview

We continue our countdown to the 2009 season by looking at the Patriot League. The Bucknell Bison won the Patriot League Tournament last season by upsetting Army and Navy to make it to the NCAA Tournament. The Bison made an impact on the NCAA Tournament by knocking off number 4 national seed Florida State 7-0 in the opening round of the Tallahassee Regional behind a tremendous pitching performance from Matthew Wilson.
