NCBWA Names Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List

NCBWA LogoBirmingham, Ala. (NCBWA) — Forty players have been named to the initial watch list for the fifth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, as announced by the association Tuesday.

With two of the finalists for the 2008 honor back for another season (Scott Bittle of Ole Miss and Eric Pettis of UC Irvine), as well as an impressive list of All-Americans, another exciting race for this year’s Stopper of the Year Award is anticipated. Georgia relief ace Joshua Fields, a first-round draft pick of the Seattle Mariners and the Southeastern Conference’s all-time saves leader, claimed last year’s award. Read the rest of this entry »

2009 America East Coaches Poll

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— Last year’s regular season champion, Binghamton University, barely edged out the defending tournament champion, Stony Brook University, to claim the top spot in the 2009 America East Baseball Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Bearcats received four of a possible six votes and garnered 34 points, while the Seawolves claimed the remaining three votes and finished with 33 points. Coming off a year where the East Carolina baseball team made its second consecutive NCAA Regional appearance (ninth in the last 10 years) and reached the Conway Regional Finals, fourth-year head coach Billy Godwin once again will look to steer the Pirate ship into post-season play.

With the loss of six seniors and one junior from last year’s squad that posted its second consecutive 40-win season (42-21), the Pirates return 22 lettermen to go along with 13 newcomers and look to take the next step of reaching their goal of the College World Series. UC opens its 2009 campaign on Friday, Feb. 20, at the inaugural BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge. The Bearcats play Purdue University at 1 p.m. at the Raymond A. Naimoli Complex in St. Petersburg, Fla.

There is no doubt that 2008 BIG EAST Co-Player of the Year Josh Harrison will be missed at second base, but an energetic group of young players look to cement themselves in the middle, led by returning shortstop Chris Peters.

Following a record-setting 2007 which saw six starters drafted and another six more players graduate, seven newcomers saw extensive action in 2008. The combination of young, experienced players with a core of talented veterans brings much promise and high expectations for 2009 with the return of 22 letterwinners. Last season saw an opportunity for fresh faces in several places around the diamond, where inexperience limited the Scarlet Knights success, as compared to years past. But the same commitment to winning head coach Fred Hill has always instilled for the last 25 years in his clubs is clearly evident in this year’s squad. The Scarlet Knights will bring a game-tested roster to the diamond this spring with six position starters and nine pitchers all returning. Hill’s system has built the Rutgers program into one of the best in the Northeast, which has proven able to compete with the best in the nation, and the 2009 Scarlet Knights expect the trend to continue this spring. IRVING, Texas — Texas A&M, the defending Big 12 regular season champion, has been tabbed the preseason favorite to win the 2009 league title in a vote of the league’s head coaches. It marks the first time in 10 years that the Aggies have been selected to win the Big 12 crown prior to the season. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams. With a new coaching staff in place and a newly upgrade stadium the Michigan State Spartans approach the 2009 with optimism in the air and new beginnings abound.
