Arizona State 2 Missouri 1

TEMPE, Ariz. – – No. 15 Mizzou attempted a late rally against Arizona State Thursday night in Tempe, Ariz., but fell short, as the eighth-ranked Sun Devils defeated the Tigers 2-1 on day one of the DeMarini Invitational. The loss extends Missouri’s losing streak to five.

Trailing 2-0 in the ninth inning, MU scored once and had the trying run at third base when the final out was recorded. Junior Greg Folgia and senior Ryan Lollis delivered back-to-back one-out singles. And Folgia scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Aaron Senne. Lollis advanced to third on the sacrifice fly, but was stranded at third.

Arizona State built its 2-0 lead by scoring a run in each of the first two innings. The first two ASU batters in the bottom of the first inning singled as the Sun Devils took a 1-0 lead. Arizona State added a run in the second as Mike Murphy delivered a RBI double.

East Carolina 14 Oklahoma State 7

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Oklahoma State suffered its first loss of the 2009 season Thursday as No. 23 East Carolina topped the 11th-ranked Cowboys, 14-7, in front of 3,596 fans at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

OSU, which fell to 4-1 with the loss, led 7-1 after three innings, but six Cowboy pitchers allowed 20 hits in the contest and the Pirates used an eight-run rally in the seventh frame to propel them to the win.

The Cowboys got on the scoreboard in the second inning as Doug Kroll led off the frame with his team-leading third home run of the season, a shot over the right-centerfield wall.

OSU wasn’t done. Back-to-back singles by Dean Green and Tyrone Hambly followed by a sacrifice bunt from Davis Duren put runners on second and third. And with two outs, Dusty Harvard delivered with a two-RBI single to center field to give the Cowboys a 3-0 lead

Kansas State 7 Pacific 4

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Kansas State combined to score seven runs in the second and third innings and held off a ninth-inning rally by Pacific as the Wildcats defeated the Tigers, 7-4, Thursday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium. With the win, K-State improved to 3-1, while Pacific dropped to 1-3.

With Kansas State up 7-1 going into the top of the ninth, Pacific received two singles and a fielder’s choice off of K-State freshman reliever James Allen, which was followed by a two-RBI double by Jamie Niley to make the score 7-3.

Allen then forced a groundout and gave way to Thomas Rooke, but a two-out error by Carter Jurica plated another run for the Tigers and brought the tying run to the plate. However, Rooke struck out Mike Walker on a 2-2 pitch to preserve the win for K-State.
