Save Northern Iowa Baseball?

We reported on Monday that Northern Iowa will be dropping baseball at the end of the 2009 season (Click here for article) but it looks like head coach Rick Heller has gotten a reprieve. He asked Athletic Director Troy Dannen for a chance to raise money to keep the team going. The amount of money that needs to be raised is a little outrageous according to what Dannen stated saying:

“The program has the opportunity to raise funds privately in place of those eliminated as a result of the funding cuts. The challenge is not to raise money for one year, and wonder what fate will lie ahead a year from now. Rather, it is to raise an additional $1.2 million before the national letter of intent signing day in early April to sustain the program through the next three years. During the next three years, an additional $10 million would need to be raised to fully endow the program and provide for its continuation beyond 2012. While this is a steep hill to climb, they have accepted this challenge.”

We should see what happens with this situation over the next few months.
