Greg Rohan (Kent State)

MAC East Division Player of the Week
Greg Rohan, Kent State, Infield
Senior, North Lima, Ohio/South Range

Rohan had a career-high five hits and seven RBI in six at-bats and also scored a game-high four runs in the series finale against UNC Greensboro. He hit a two-run home run in the fourth and had his first career grand slam in the seventh. With the two home runs in the game, Rohan is currently tied for fifth in KSU history with 35 home runs. He finished the week with a .588 batting average, 1.059 slugging percentage, nine RBI’s, six runs and two homeruns.

MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week
Mike Stangroom, Buffalo, Pitcher
Senior, Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall

Stangroom pitched a solid performance in five scoreless innings, allowing only one hit against Iona College on Friday, February 20. He struck out 8 of the 19 batters he faced.

MAC West Division Player of the Week
Ian Nielsen, Ball State , First Base
Freshman, La Porte, Ind./La Porte

Nielsen had a stellar collegiate debut for the Cardinals as he posted a .588 (10-of-17) batting average in Ball State’s season-opening weekend at Furman. Nielsen posted an on-base percentage of .650 for the weekend as he reached base 13 times. He tallied two home runs in the four games, including a home run in his first career collegiate at bat. He drove in six runs and scored four runs while posting a 1.000 slugging percentage. He reached base at least four times in three of the games on the weekend, including a four-hit output in the Cardinals’ victory Saturday in game one of the doubleheader.

MAC West Division Pitcher of the Week
Dan Taylor, Central Michigan, Pitcher
Senior, Jenison, Mich./Jenison

Taylor got the start on the hill against No. 35 Wichita State, going six innings while giving up three runs on nine hits and a pair of walks. He struck out eight and picked up his first win of the season.

Other Top Performances

Brandon White, Akron, C/OF
Sophomore, Wheelersburg, Ohio/Wheelersburg/Kent State

In back-to-back games against Wake Forest and Old Dominion, the sophomore paced the Akron offense recording four hits in nine at-bats, including two three-run homers and a double. White currently leads the team in total bases (13), RBI (7), Runs scored (4) and HR (2).

Brad Piatt, Ball State, Pitcher
Junior, Galveston, Ind./Lewis Cass

Piatt recorded his first win of the 2009 season Saturday afternoon as he worked five innings of one run baseball in the Cardinals’ 14-4 seven-inning victory over Furman. Piatt allowed just four hits in his first start as he struck out two batters and did not register a walk.

David Borcherdt, Bowling Green, DH
Junior, Archbold, Ohio/Archbold

Borcherdt hit a three-run home run in a five-run first inning in the season opener at Western Carolina. Also had a single and scored in the fourth inning as BG built a 6-2 lead. Went 2-for-3 in the opener with two RBI and two runs scored. Also played in the Sunday game going 0-for-2.

Chris Ciesla, Buffalo, DH
Senior, Endicott,NY/Union-Endicott

Ciesla also picked up his first career save against Iona College in the Bulls 14-2 victory on Friday, February 22. Ciesla struck out 5 of the 8 batters he faced.

Rhett Goodmiller, Central Michigan, Infielder
Freshman, Ossian, Ind./Norwell

Goodmiller went 6-for-10 on the week (.600) while getting hit by a pitch five times and walked once for a .750 on-base percentage. He scored seven runs, drove in four and went 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts. He slugged .700 for the week for a 1.450 OPS, in the first week of his collegiate career.

Jim Gulliver, Eastern Michigan, Infielder
Junior, Allen Park, Mich./Allen Park

In four games in Rock Hill, S.C., junior Jim Gulliver went 9-for-17 (.529) at the dish, including two triples and one double. The Allen Park, Mich. native also tallied three RBI and scored six runs during EMU’s 2-2 weekend in the Johnny Gill Memorial Tournament. Gulliver recorded multi-hit games in three consecutive games during the weekend, recording a .824 slugging percentage in the four game stretch.

Kendall Lewis, Eastern Michigan, Pitcher
Freshman, Huntsville, Ohio/Indian Lake

Lewis went six innings in his first collegiate start, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits, striking out three George Washington University batters to pick up the victory in EMU’s 5-4 win, Feb. 22. Lewis also pitched one-third of an inning against Winthrop, Feb. 21.

Hayden Johnston, Ohio, Outfielder
Senior, Strattanville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone

Hayden started all four games and led Ohio in hits, runs, RBIs, doubles and home runs over the opening weekend, while not committing an error in nine chances. He also leads the Bobcats with an .889 slugging percentage and had a .421 on-base percentage over the weekend. Saturday against Lafayette, Johnston hit the game-tying home run in the top of the eighth inning, one of his three hits in the game. Sunday in Ohio’s 10-4 win over Army, he had his second-straight three-hit game, including a two-run homer in the fifth inning that gave the Bobcats a comfortable 5-1 cushion.

Zak Hatfield, Miami, DH
Junior, Fort Wayne, Ind.

Hatfield made his debut in the Red and White in a big way with a two-run home as his first hit Feb. 21. Hatfield drove in six on the weekend and hit two homeruns.

Jordin Hood, Northern Illinois, Infielder/Outfielder
Junior, Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich

Hood had at least one hit in all four games during NIU’s season opening weekend, recording multi-hit games in his first three while reaching base 12 times in four games and going 9-for-14 at the plate. In the first game of the year, he went 2-for-3 with a walk and two steals against North Florida. He posted back-to-back three-hit performances against Mississippi State. He went 3-for-3 in the first game against MSU with a run scored and an RBI on a solo homerun. In the second game versus MSU, he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI to help NIU win its first game of the year. In the last game of the weekend against UNF, he went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. He totaled an on-base percentage of .706 for the weekend with three steals and slugged .857.
