Baylor 7 BYU 6

WACO, Texas — Landis Ware scampered home from third base on a passed ball with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give sixth-ranked Baylor a 7-6 victory over BYU in midweek action Monday night at Baylor Ballpark. It was the third walk-off win in four games for Baylor (3-1) this season.

Ware knocked a one-out, pinch-hit single to right-center and moved to second when Joey Hainsfurther’s pop up down the line in right landed in no-man’s land. BYU right fielder Michael Bowen quickly snagged the ball and nearly got the force out on Ware at second base; however, shortstop Brandon Relf could muffed Bowen’s low throw, and Ware was safe.

Brooks Kimmey then beat out a would-be double play ball, putting runners on the corners with two outs and bringing pinch hitter Ben Booker to the plate. Booker saw one pitch – a breaking ball that skipped past BYU catcher Bryce Ayoso, allowing Ware to score the winning run.

Logan Verrett (2-0) earned the victory in relief. He recorded one strikeout and worked around an error in 1.2 scoreless and hitless innings. Starter Aaron Miller allowed five runs, four earned, on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts over 5.1 innings. Baylor pitchers held BYU hitless after Sean McNaughton’s leadoff single in the sixth.

Jake Wortham (0-1) took the loss, allowing one unearned run on two hits and no walks with one strikeout over 1.0 innings.

It was a teeter-totter game throughout the night as each team held the lead twice prior to the game-ending play. BYU’s Jonathan Cluff put the Cougars up 1-0 with a one-out RBI single in the second.

Baylor answered with three runs on three hits and a pair of walks in the bottom of the third. Shaver Hansen and Raynor Campbell hit back-to-back home runs on the inning’s first two pitches. Dustin Dickerson followed with a single and later scored on Hainsfurther’s sacrifice fly.

BYU pulled to within one run at 3-2 with an unearned run in the fourth and then recaptured the lead with a three-run sixth. Baylor again answered quickly, scoring three runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning. Dickerson had the key hit in the inning, a two-out, two-run single up the middle that gave the Bears a 6-5 lead.

The Cougars knotted the game again in the top of the eighth when Cluff drew a one-out walk, moved to third on a Baylor error and scored on Bowen’s groundout.

Dickerson was 3-for-5, while Hainsfurther was 3-for-4. It was the second three-hit game of the season for both players. Hansen was 2-for-5 and scored twice.

Baylor returns to action Wednesday, concluding a season-opening, five-game home stand with a single game against Houston Baptist at Baylor Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CST. Freshman right-hander Trent Blank (0-0, 18.00) is scheduled to make his first career start.

NOTES: This was Baylor’s first-ever game against BYU. … The Bears are 141-107 all-time against programs currently playing as members of the Mountain West Conference. … Hansen and Campbell became the first Baylor players to homer in back-to-back at bats since Miller and Ware accomplished the feat March 30, 2008, at Oklahoma. … Hansen and Campbell became the first Baylor players to homer on back-to-back pitches since Chase Gerdes and Matt Czimskey accomplished the feat at Oklahoma State in 2007.
