Goldschmidt goes 4-for-7 with four RBI in today's action

Texas State 3 Arkansas State 2

The Texas State Bobcat baseball team scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, seventh and eighth inning to overcome a 2-0 Arkansas State lead and took a 3-2 victory from the Red Wolves Sunday afternoon at the UT Arlington/Hilton Invitational.

Texas State hit the diamond again at 3 p.m. against first-time opponent Siena and rushed by the Saints in a 10-5 contest to complete the sweep of today’s action. The Bobcats are now 3-1 on the season.

Kane Holbrooks was credited with his first win of the season, tossing 8.0 innings with three strikeouts against Arkansas State. The senior held the foe to just five hits in game one.

Lamar 13 Austin Peay 10

Chris Dunkin collected four hits, while Brian Taylor and Brent Harris each hit a 2-run home run in the decisive fifth inning to lift Lamar to a 13-10 victory over Austin Peay and a sweep of the four-game series at Vincent-Beck Stadium Sunday.

Lamar (4-0) won its fourth-consecutive game to start the season, marking the tenth time in 45 years of the program for that to occur. Austin Peay dropped to 0-4.

Nicholls State 18 Chicago State 3

he Colonels collected 18 runs on 15 hits en route to their third-straight victory, an 18-3 win over Chicago State to sweep the opening series of the 2009 season.

Nicholls improves to 3-0 on the year, while the Cougars fall to 0-3.

Sam Houston State 5 Creighton 4

Tyler Knight singled with two out and runners on second and third to give Sam Houston State an 11-inning 5-4 victory over Creighton Sunday afternoon as the Bearkats completed a four-game weekend sweep of the Bluejays at Don Sanders Stadium.

Catcher Mark Wyatt went 3-for-4 at the plate including a solo home run in the first inning to account for each of Sam Houston’s first three runs.

Eastern Illinois 5 Southeastern Louisiana 1

– Mike Recchia gave up only one run while striking out a career-high 10 over eight innings, leading Eastern Illinois baseball to a rubber game victory at Southeastern Louisiana, 5-1, Sunday afternoon in the final of the three-game, season-opening series.

McNeese State 6 Houston Baptist 2

HBU managed just five hits in a 6-2 decision against McNeese State on Sunday afternoon at Cowboy Diamond.

The Huskies fell behind 1-0 after the first inning and the McNeese State lead grew slowly as the game wore on. By the end of the fifth, HBU was down 5-0. MSU added a run in the eighth before the Huskies got on the board. Eric Schiro drew a one-out walk in the top of the ninth inning and then scored on Beau Warren’s first home run of the season.

Three of the Huskies’ five hits were for extra bases. Along with Warren’s home run, Schiro and Andrew Taccolini each had one double. It was the second consecutive game in which HBU managed just five hits.

Stephen F Austin 7 Northwestern State 2

Freshman Brett Rogers tossed eight innings in his first collegiate appearance, helping hand Johnny Cardenas his first win as a head coach with a 7-2 win over Northwestern State in the finale of the ULM Warhawk Classic.

Rogers’ effort earned him a spot on the all-tournament team for SFA (1-2), as did shortstop Tanner Hines who finished with four hits, a pair of RBI and some stellar defense in three games over the weekend.
