St. Edward’s swept by St. Mary’s

AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward’s baseball team dropped two games to open a weekend series with St. Mary’s Friday afternoon in San Antonio. The Rattlers took game one, 3-0, and won the second contest, 5-2.

In game one, St. Mary’s (9-3, 7-3 HC) got on the board first, scoring two runs in the second inning. The first run scored due to a defensive mishap by St. Edward’s (6-6, 5-4 HC), while Rattler center fielder Michael Brzezinski drove in the second run with a single to center field. St. Mary’s tacked on another run in the fifth inning and went on to take the game, 3-0.

Catcher Drew Kimball led the way for the Hilltoppers, going 2-3 at the plate. On the mound for the Hilltoppers, Brent Davis (0-2) worked 4.2 solid innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits.

In game two, St. Edward’s got on the board in the first inning. Third baseman Daniel Rufini scored left fielder Dylan Schuch on a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Hilltoppers scored one more run in the second inning when Kimball scored on a balk by Rattler pitcher Scott Shimek; however, this would be the last run of the day for St. Edward’s. St. Mary’s took advantage of a five-run second inning to grab the, 5-2, victory.

Kimball led the way again, reaching base in all three of his plate appearances. He drew two walks to go along with a single and a run scored. Schuch was 1-3 with a run scored.

Bret Friemel (2-1) went the distance for the Hilltoppers. Friemel gave up five runs (only one earned) on five hits in his six innings of work.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action Saturday afternoon as they travel to San Antonio to conclude their weekend series against rival St. Mary’s. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
