Here is your Patriot League Recap for February 21st.

Game 1: Lafayette 2 Ohio 1
Game 2: Lafayette 10 Davidson 6

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Leopards began their 2009 baseball season with a bang, taking both games of a season-opening doubleheader in Davidson. Lafayette won a 2-1 decision against Ohio in the day’s first game and capped off the afternoon with a 10-6 win over host Davidson.

Senior shortstop Daniel Bierce led the Lafayette offense with five hits, including a two-run home run against Davidson, and added three RBI. Sophomore righty Zach Fritz tossed 6.2 shutout innings against Ohio and Corey Shea threw four innings of one-run relief in the Leopards’ second victory.

Lafayette (2-0) came out on top of a 2-1 pitchers’ duel with Ohio to kickoff the day. Fritz scattered just six hits over his six-plus innings of work and the Leopards pushed across the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning when singled home freshman Bobby Fargnoli.

Game 1: Virginia 7 Bucknell 0
Game 2: Virginia 6 Bucknell 1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Continuing its opening weekend four-game set at Virginia on Saturday, the Bucknell baseball team dropped a pair of contests to the Cavaliers on Saturday afternoon, losing 7-0 and 6-1 at Davenport Field. An RBI triple by Andrew Brouse (Kreamer, Pa./Midd-West) in the first inning of game two gave Bucknell (0-3) its first lead of the young season and its only run in the doubleheader.

Virginia (3-0) totaled 12 hits in game one and 10 more in game two. Steven Proscia, who belted a three-run home run in the middle of a six-run fourth inning in game two, was 4-for-8 on the day with four runs batted in.

Game 1: Army 14 Ohio 5

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Clint Moore homered, tripled and drove in four runs, Ben Koenigsfeild went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and Matt Fouch fired six shutout innings as Army opened its season with a 14-5 defeat of Ohio University, Saturday morning at Wilson Field.

Arrmy (1-0) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after three innings behind two-run home runs by Kyle Fleming and Kevin McKague. J.P. Polchinski worked a one-out walk and scored when Fleming drilled his first career home run down the left-field line in the bottom of the second off Bobcat starter Zach Ehlmer (0-1). Koenigsfeld ripped a leadoff double down the left-field line and McKague followed with a two-run shot to left-center field, staking Fouch (1-0) to the early four-run cushion.

Ohio (1-1) plated a pair of unearned runs off Fouch in the fifth inning as the Bobcats benefitted from a pair of Black Knight fielding errors and an RBI single by Gauntlett Eldemire. But Army answered quickly, stretching its lead back to 6-2, chasing Elmer with a pair of runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning.

Southern Miss 13 Lehigh 0

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Lehigh faced another setback on day two of the 2009 season when it dropped its second consecutive game to the Southern Miss. Golden Eagles on Saturday at Pete Taylor Park. The Mountain Hawks gave up five runs in the first inning and never recovered, as they went down, 13-0, to the Golden Eagles.

Andrew Berger drew the task of trying to shut down the Southern Miss. lineup that scored 18 runs in the first game of the season. The junior righty gave up nine runs – only six of them earned – on nine hits and two walks over 2.2 innings before being lifted in the third.

“Andrew really only made four mistakes today,” Lehigh head coach Sean Leary said of his starting pitcher. “But I think they hit all four of them hard.”
