The Patriot League saw only three teams in action with none of the teams picking up a win.

Virginia 12 Bucknell 0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Three Virginia pitchers combined on a shutout of Bucknell and limited the Bison to just four hits as the Bucknell baseball team dropped its season opener to the Cavaliers, 12-0, Friday evening at a chilly and blustery Davenport Field. The contest was the first of a four-game series scheduled for this weekend.

B.J. LaRosa (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal), Doug Shribman (Marblehead, Mass./Belmont Hill), Andrew Loucks (Mississauga, Ontario/Appleby College) and Bret Sokirka (Wyoming, Pa./Wyoming Area) each managed a single for the Bison, who committed four errors in the loss. Bucknell advanced just one runner as far as second base, and that came in the seventh inning when an infield single by Loucks advanced Shribman, who had reached on a fielder’s choice following a walk by Zachary Brown (Stroudsburg, Pa./Notre Dame).

Southern Miss 18 Lehigh 1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The 2009 Lehigh baseball season got off to a tough start in Hattiesburg on Friday, as the Mountain Hawks dropped the opener to Southern Miss., 18-1, at Pete Taylor Park.

Greg Angelo was hit with seven runs in 1.2 innings for the Mountain Hawks, striking out one and walking five. The junior lefty gave up six hits to the deep Golden Eagles lineup, including a three-run triple by Corey Stevens in the second in the middle of a seven-run second inning for Southern Miss

“We’re a much better team than we showed today,” Lehigh head coach Sean Leary said. “We didn’t execute the small things today. We didn’t work ahead and had way too many free passes, and a high-level team like this is going to take advantage of that.”

Air Force 2 Navy 0

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – The Navy baseball team suffered a season-opening 2-0 setback to Air Force in the Service Academy Spring Classic on Friday afternoon at USA Stadium.

Air Force starter Alex Truesdale fired 7.2 shutout innings with only three hits and one walk allowed to go along with five strikeouts to earn the win. Reliever Aaron Kurcz went the final-1.1 innings to pick up the save.

“(Alex Truesdale) was able to get ahead of every batter,” stated Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. “In addition, he had command of three pitches. That combination is one that we’ll struggle with.”
