In the first game, Hardin Simmons jumped out to an early lead 1-0 in the top of the first on an RBI double, but the Pirates tied it up in their half of the first on a sac fly from Michael Murphy to make it a 1-1 contest.

Murphy put Southwestern ahead in the third inning on an RBI single and Brent McMullen scored on a double play to give the Pirates a 3-1 lead.

The Pirates tacked on another run in the fourth on an RBI double Todd Boone to extend their lead to 4-1. HSU cut into its deficit in the sixth inning by scoring a pair of runs on an RBI single and an RBI groundout, and had runners on second and third with two outs, but Michael Reinhardt induced a popup to keep the Pirates ahead 4-3.

In the top of the seventh inning, the last scheduled inning of the first game, the Pirates’ Chris Churchwell recorded the first two outs before Matt Roam made a game-saving outstretched catch in left field to seal Southwestern’s 4-3 win.

Wes Willis earned the win and improved to 2-1 by tossing six innings and fanning six, while Churchwell picked up his first save of the year. Todd Boone led the Pirates with a 3-for-4 game, while Murphy recorded a pair of RBI.

In the second game of the double-header, Southwestern got off to a strong start. Jumping on mistakes from Hardin Simmons pitcher Tim Kriegel and defensive miscues, they scored six runs in the second inning.

Brantey Freeman started the game for the Pirates, and dominated the Cowboys from the very beginning. He was never in too much trouble, allowing only one hit over six innings while striking out nine.

Four different Pirates had a multi-hit game, including a 3-4, 3 RBI performance from first baseman Kyle Belski. Southwestern went on another run in the sixth inning, scoring five runs and putting the score at 13-0.

Chris Webber pitched a scoreless inning to close out the game in the seventh, as a 13-run deficit shortened the game due to the run-rule. The Pirates move to 6-4 and will now travel to Seguin to play Texas Lutheran on Tuesday.
