ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech baseball team begins the 2009 season Friday, Feb. 20 when it opens a three-game series with Lipscomb. Every day, leading up to the first pitch, a different member of the 2009 squad will check in with their thoughts on the upcoming season. Today’s blog is by senior outfielder Chris House.

What’s up Yellow Jackets!

Today was our second day of official team practice. We were coming off a day off and you might ask, “Why would we have Monday off?”

It’s like this because we are now on our in-season schedule. Mondays are always are off day during the season. This works out well because many of us take a three hour class on Monday as well as other classes to lighten our schedules throughout the rest of the week.

As for practice, we had a full schedule of early hitting, cut-offs and relays, batting practice and a five inning intrasquad game. Jed Bradley threw five innings while Elliott Ogawa and Thomas Nichols combined for five. Each pitcher had solid outings. Bradley only walked one in five innings, something (control) that is a must for any pitcher. Ogawa was crafty as always, changing speeds like a sneaky veteran. Thomas “Twilight” Nichols had his first career appearance in full daylight at Georgia Tech. He has come on strong ever since he first stepped on the mound last fall. I believe he will be a force for the Jackets in the bullpen this spring. As for the hitters, Derek Dietrich hit a bomb to highlight the offense.

The weather was pretty chilly yesterday. It started off as a very nice day, but the sun took refuge behind the clouds and the winds picked up to take its toll on the Rusty C. It was good preparation for the handful of games that will be similar or even worse when the season gets under way.

Tune in this afternoon for an update on the “freshmen haircuts.” I guarantee everyone will enjoy it!
