(Victoria, Texas) The Victoria Generals continue to build the newest franchise in The Texas Collegiate League.

While the collegiate season is just getting underway, the Generals are watching and selecting players from around the United States
to represent them this summer in their inaugural season.

Jay Laramore, a 6’2″ 220 pound lefthanded hitting first baseman/DH from Roanoke College is the latest to be signed by VP of Baseball Operations Brad Haynes.

Roanoke’s Head Coach Larry Wood said “Jay Laramore is a quality person, ‘on and off’ the field. He will be a large part of our program. Jay is extremely strong with very quick hands. He puts everything he has into his swing. There’s a lot of “pop” in his bat and he works diligently on his game. Always working to get better…has a good glove as well. Very smart. Great guy and will be an asset to any program.”

The 21 year old missed the 2008 college season due to a shoulder injury, but played for the Carolina Hurricane, a wood bat summer collegiate league based in Charlotte, NC. He hit .331 with 4 HR’s and 39 RBI’s in 115 at-bats. In the summer of 2007 Jay played for the same team (in a limited role due to the shoulder) hitting .415 with 2 HR’s and 9 RBI’s in 37 at-bats. Laramore was a North Carolina all state swimmer also.

Haynes also announced that the Generals have added a local player to their roster. Chris Whitehead from Edna will be a redshirt Freshman at Texas A&M University – Kingsville. Whitehead was a four year starter at Edna HS where he hit .420 his senior year.

“Chris is an outstanding young man and will be an asset to your team. Chris is currently redshirting and will be a big part of our future for the next 4 years. He is a left handed hitter and will eventually hit for power. He has good speed for a big guy and will play left field for us, with the ability to play 1st base as well” said Jason Gonzales A&M Kingsville’s Head Baseball Coach.

“Having Chris in this redshirt situation allows Coach Clemens to have depth at many positions because of his versatility, said Haynes. “He’ll learn the league, what it takes to compete at the college level, and have that extra year to play for us. We would like to see him at both corners in the infield and outfield as well as catcher and DH.” Chris was a 4 year starter for the HS football team as well.

Chris Clemens the Generals head coach is close to finishing off the team’s roster and those names will be announced in the coming weeks.
