UNC Asheville Announces 2009 Baseball Schedule

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Nine games at McCormick Field, a two-game series at national power Florida State and hosting the Big South Conference Baseball Tournament are the highlights of the 2009 UNC Asheville baseball schedule. The 56-game schedule was announced today by head coach Willie Stewart.

The College Baseball Blog recently had a chance to talk to Lelo Prado of South Florida. He is entering his third season with the Bulls after spending the previous eleven seasons with Louisville. He is still the career leader in victories for the Cardinals. He came to Louisville after spending seven seasons with the Tampa Spartans winning two national championships. Rivals Top 25 Countdown: Number 15 San Diego

Kendall Rogers continues his countdown of the Top 25 teams in the nation with San Diego at the 15th spot. The Toreros return a young pitching staff that is talented but lack experience on a collegiate mound. They will need to replace All-American Brian Matusz who was drafted in the first round of the 2008 MLB Draft. Josh Romanski also made the jump into the minor leagues after a strong career. Receiving 78 points and seven first-place votes, Cal State Fullerton was tabbed as the favorite to win the 2009 Big West Conference crown, according to the Big West Conference preseason poll conducted by the league’s nine head coaches. The Titans have claimed at least a share of seven of the last 10 league titles and a conference-best 14 overall. UC Irvine was selected to finish second with 67 points and UC Santa Barbara was picked third after receiving 65 points and one first-place nod.

TAMPA, Fla. – Despite chilling temperatures, the University of South Florida baseball team hit the field for an hour Tuesday afternoon in a warmup for the quickly approaching first day of spring practice.

“The first day of practice is always exciting,” said USF Head Coach Lelo Prado. “We’re only out here today for an hour, but all of the guys are jumping around and are excited for the season.”

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Head coach Brad Hill and the 35 members of this year’s Kansas State baseball team will be signing autographs for fans along the concourse on the north end of Bramlage Coliseum prior to Wednesday night’s men’s basketball game against Baylor.

The autograph session, which begins as 7 p.m., will feature a Wildcat squad that returns 14 letterwinners, including six seniors, who advanced to the school’s first Big 12 Championship Title Game in 2008 and finished with the most conference wins and the best conference finish since 2002.

UIC releases 2009 Schedule

CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team unveiled its 2009 schedule on Tuesday, Jan. 20, with a season-opening series against perennial national power Texas beginning a challenging slate for the defending Horizon League champion Flames.

UIC’s campaign begins a month from now against the Longhorns on Friday, Feb. 20 at 3:30 p.m. in Austin, Texas. That is the first of a four-game set against Texas, which is ranked fourth in Baseball America’s Preseason Top 25 Rankings. Read the rest of this entry »

CBI talks to Justin Milo (Vermont)

College Baseball Insider recently posted an interview with Vermont dual sport athlete Justin Milo. He is a hockey player during the winter and trades his skates for spikes after the Frozen Four when he joins the baseball squad. At the time of the interview, he was tied for third in scoring on the nationally ranked hockey squad. Last season in baseball, Milo had a .328 average with six homers and 40 RBI in 50 games. Top College Teams in Maryland

The Navy Midshipmen Examiner writer Tom Flynn  has an excellent article previewing college baseball in the state of Maryland. He has the Maryland Terrapins as the top program in the state. The Terps usually struggle against the highly competitive teams in the conference but have the best team. He has CAA runner up Towson in the second spot after they went 30-28. The Navy Midshipmen come in at the third spot after another 30 win campaign and an appearance in the Patriot League Championship series. The rest of the top five is filled out by America East member UMBC and Northeast Conference member Mount St. Mary’s. Read the rest of this entry »
