Following a run to the College World Series last year, the Seminoles hope to make a return trip to Omaha in ’09 returning 18 letterwinners, including five position starters, while welcoming 13 newcomers.

2009 Season Preview Big 12 Part One

With the start of College Baseball season starting on February 20th and the Big 12 starting conference series on March 13th we will be taking a look at the teams of the Big 12. In 2008, Texas A&M won the regular season title but the Texas Longhorns ended up winning the Big 12 Tournament in Oklahoma City. Which teams will make a run for the conference title this year? A&M will have the top pitching staff in the Big 12, Baylor has a top Recruiting class of ’06 that are now Juniors and ready to get the Bears back to Omaha. What about Texas and the downfall they have gone through for the last 3 years? Will Andy Oliver get reinstated to help lead Oklahoma State? What about Oklahoma? They return a very good group of guys but are ready to make a run for the Big 12 Title? Can Missouri replace Aaron Crow and Jacob Priday? What kind of year will first year coach Dan Spencer have with Texas Tech?

Columbia, S.C. – The South Carolina Athletics Department will host an open house for all Gamecock fans on Friday, Feb. 13 at the new baseball facility. The event at Carolina Stadium will run from 5:30-7:30 pm and will be an opportunity for all fans to view the new stadium, identify their seat location and to see the entire facility and its amenities. Parking at the facility will be available on a first come, first serve basis. The main parking lot is located on Williams Street behind the facility. Season baseball parking passes are NOT applicable for the open house.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Senior baseball players Rhett Ballard, Ty Hohman and Sean Ryan were recently elected by their teammates as the Virginia Tech team captains for the 2009 season, head coach Pete Hughes announced on Monday.

“Rhett, Tyler and Sean have paid their dues – socially, academically and on the field – to enjoy the success that I anticipate our team having this year,” Hughes said. “I feel that we can achieve our goal of being a winning baseball team through the leadership of these three young men. Florida’s Stephen Locke charged with DUI

GatorSports.com is reporting that senior lefthanded pitcher Stephen Locke has been charged with a DUI after being arrested early Sunday morning. According to the police report, Locke was seen in a black Mercury SUV crossing a double solid yellow line nearly missing on-coming traffic. The officer pulled over the vehicle where Locke had a strong smell of alcohol and had to use his vehicle to steady himself as he left it. Locke then proceeded to refuse to take a sobriety test which caused him to be taken into custody and taken to the Alachua County jail. Read the rest of this entry »

Top 5 CBB Articles of the Week

We are now less then a month until the start of the 2009 season. This past week saw a ton of new information posted on the site highlighted by the interviews with head coaches from around the nation. The biggest news of the week was the Texas Longhorns suspending Augie Garrido for the first four games of the 2009 season for a DUI charge. We have put out our Top 10 for the NAIA season which started up this weekend with some great games. CBB contributor Bryan Young visited Eugene Oregon recently and supplied us with 15 pictures. The Big West and the West Coast Conference have put out their 2009 Preseason Coaches Poll. Our bonus article this week is by BoydWorld who looks at what programs abuse their pitchers most. College Baseball coaches from San Diego to Santa Barbara, including Northridge Head Coach Steve Rousey, convened at the ESPN Zone in Anaheim Saturday morning to show off their skills and creativity.

Their tools of choice however were not a glove, a baseball, or a bat but a skillet, a spatula, and a number of ingredients at their disposal as participants in the inaugural Baseball Cooking Challenge.

Injuries End Career for LSU’s Jordan Brown

BATON ROUGE — LSU senior pitcher Jordan Brown has decided to end his baseball career, coach Paul Mainieri announced Saturday.

Mainieri said elbow and knee injuries sustained by Brown have forced him to retire from the game.

“Jordan will remain enrolled at LSU and will continue to work toward his degree,” Mainieri said. “Unfortunately, his body just won’t allow him to compete at this level any longer. Jordan has been a great asset to our program, and we will certainly miss him this season.”

CBB Opinion on Augie Garrido Situation

Yesterday, we saw the news that Texas suspended legendary head coach Augie Garrido for the first four games of the 2009 season after picking up a DWI last week. I believe this is absolutely a horrible decision by the University of Texas to only suspend him for those games. Would Augie have suspended one of his players for only four games of the season for doing the same thing? I don’t think so. Read the rest of this entry »
