RICHARDSON, Texas –– McMurry University and the University of Texas at Tyler have been predicted to win 2009 American Southwest Conference baseball division titles, it was announced by the ASC office on Tuesday (Jan. 27) after a vote of each division’s head coaches, sports information directors and media members. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Joseph Villegas, Concordia University Texas’ Tom Williams, Hardin-Simmons University’s Kyle Barton, the University of the Ozarks’ Cory Briggs and Bruce Cameron, and UT Tyler’s Blake Booher all earned preseason individual honors.

BATON ROUGE — LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri said Tuesday that his team is planning to move into the New Alex Box Stadium early next week. Mainieri said he hopes the Tigers will be able to practice in the new facility for the first time on Tuesday, February 3.

“We are very excited to move into a beautiful, new ball park,” Mainieri said during a press luncheon at Walk-On’s Bistreaux, which also featured LSU associate athletic director Eddie Nunez. “I lose sleep on some nights thinking about how great it will be to play in the New Alex Box Stadium.”

UNC tabbed to win ACC in 2009

GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina, coming off a 54-14 season and seeking its fourth straight trip to the College World Series, received the nod as Atlantic Coast Conference baseball preseason favorite in voting by the league’s 12 head coaches.

The Tar Heels tallied 72 points with 12 first-place votes in receiving the nod as Coastal Division favorite and were named the overall ACC favorite on 10 ballots. Read the rest of this entry »

Fresno State’s Mendonca a No-Name Star?

The Merced Sun-Star has a great article on Fresno State’s Tommy Mendonca discussing his breakout season in 2008. He started last season with a .171 average over the first month. After two months, it raised to .209 while striking out 40 times before April 1st. He ended up finishing the regular season with a .259 average, 14 homers, and 47 RBI. CBB Spotlight: Jerry Sullivan (Oral Roberts)

One of our loyal readers asked for my opinion on Oral Roberts RHP Jerry Sullivan. I had the chance to see Sullivan pitch this summer with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in a Cape Cod League game that took place in Brockton, Massachusetts. (Full article about game available here.) He showed me that he has a very solid body to be an excellent sleeper candidate in the 2009 MLB Draft. Locke out at Florida

Stephen Locke has been kicked off the University of Florida baseball team according to a report by the St. Petersburg Times. Following the golf tournament is the 22nd annual Double Play Dinner at 7:30 p.m. at the Fresno Convention Center New Exhibit Hall. Social hour will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Fullerotn, Calif. – After a whirlwind cross-county move to take over the tradition-rich Cal State Fullerton program, second-year Head Coach Dave Serrano is looking forward to getting back into the rhythm of a normal baseball season and the usual challenges of returning the Titans to Omaha.

“It seems more comfortable for me and my coaching staff along with the players,” said Serrano. “When I first got here there was a lot of turmoil surrounding the program because of Coach (George) Horton’s leaving for the University of Oregon and my leaving a program that had just gone to Omaha.
