EUGENE, Ore. – The return of Oregon baseball is less than a month away, and today the Oregon Sports Network announced that it will broadcast 15 games during the season.

“My staff, the student-athletes and the program are delighted about the news that OSN will be producing a 15-game schedule this season,” head coach George Horton said. “The University and the Athletics Department has made a great step to reach out to all of our fans.”

Senior outfielder Chris Davis enters his final season at USA as the lone fifth-year senior on the 2009 Jaguar squad. While making 47 starts at three different positions, Davis hit .265 with eight home runs and 41 RBI in 51 games played a year ago.

One of the most versatile players ever to play at USA, Davis spent time at first, second and third bases, and played both corner outfield spots in 2008. Despite playing all over the field, he was consistent at the plate, as evidenced by a streak of 20 consecutive games in which he reached base safely.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M baseball assistant Matt Deggs has been promoted to associate head coach, Aggie head coach Rob Childress announced Wednesday.

Entering his fourth season as the third base coach at A&M, Deggs is in charge of running the offense and the infielders while assisting in recruiting.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina University’s baseball team has been voted the Big South Conference’s preseason favorite by the League’s Head Baseball Coaches, it was announced today by the Conference office. In addition, the coaches voted Radford senior infielder Alex Gregory (Great Falls, Va.) the Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year and Coastal Carolina junior Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla.) the League’s Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

Rice once again preseason favorite in C-USA

Coming off a third consecutive trip to the College World Series, Rice has been selected as the preseason favorite in the 2009 Conference USA baseball poll, chosen by the league’s nine head coaches. Rice is ranked as high as No. 3 in the preseason national rankings as the Owls look for a 14th consecutive conference title.

Preseason Player of the Year honors were given to Marshall senior OF Nate Lape, who helped lead the Thundering Herd to its highest win total (30) as a Division I member last season. Read the rest of this entry »

Baseball America projects 2009 NCAA Tourney

1-05-06-rosenblatt-stadiumBaseball America writer Aaron Fitt has put out his 2009 NCAA Tournament Projections. He has Texas A&M as the top overall seed. The rest of the top eight seeds are North Carolina at number 2, LSU at number 3, Cal State Fullerton at number 4, Rice at number 5, Texas at number 6, Ole Miss at number 7, and UCLA at number 8. The other number 1 seeds to host are Baylor, Georgia, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Missouri, Arizona State, and UC-Irvine. Jared Mitchell and Chad Jones status with LSU Baseball

Jared Mitchell and Chad Jones are both members of the LSU football and baseball teams but receive different treatment from baseball coach Paul Mainieri and football coach Les Miles. Jared Mitchell will be a member of the LSU baseball squad for the entire season and join the football club during summer workouts. Mitchell showed me in a Cape Cod Baseball League that he is an excellent player with great speed. He should be drafted in the upcoming 2009 MLB Draft. Chad Jones has the opposite problem as he will be able to be a member of the LSU baseball program until spring practice for football begins on March 12th. This will leave the Tigers squad short a player since Jones recieved scholarship money from the baseball program and counts against the 35 players limit. Read the rest of this entry »
