HAMMOND – According to head coach #Jay Artigues#, last year’s Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team had a strong leader on the roster in the form of catcher Matthew Schexnayder. Schexnayder’s graduation following the 2008 campaign left a vacuum in that crucial role, but, also according to Artigues, this year’s group of backstops is more than ready to step in.

NEC Preseason Favorite Monmouth eyes fourth- ever league crown

Somerset, NJ — Monmouth won five first-place votes to find itself in its familiar position atop the Northeast Conference baseball preseason poll. The Hawks have earned the moniker of NEC preseason favorite in three of the past four years. Central Connecticut State collected two first-place nods to finish second in the vote by the conference’s eight head coaches followed by Wagner which garnered the remaining first-place vote in third. The league office released the annual rankings on Thursday as a prelude to its 23rd season of Division I baseball.

UMBC Baseball Announces Captains for 2009 Season

BALTIMORE-To mark the 42nd season of UMBC baseball and practice starting next week, head coach John Jancuska announced that seniors Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech/Catonsville C.C.), Ryan Morse (Frederick, Md./Catoctin/Chesapeake JC) and Dave Warrenfeltz (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) have been named captains for the 2009 squad. THIBODAUX, La. – With the first pitch of the 2009 baseball season just 22 days away, the battle for starting roles is heating up amongst pitchers and catchers at Nicholls.

This season, the Colonels welcome three new catchers in JuCo transfers Kevin Schlegel and Jason Dennis and freshman Michael Cagley. Schlegel (Oklahoma City, Okla./Northeast Texas CC) exhibits quality defensive skills and should see substantial time behind the plate. Dennis (Mobile, Ala./Alabama Southern CC) is a high-energy player who works well with the pitching staff and can handle the grind of catching every day.

Mike Rooney knows the Sun Devils well

Mike Rooney was  recently named the color analyst for the 2009 baseball season for Arizona State. He is currently the Director of Special Projects and External Affairs for the ASU Baseball program. NAIA recap for January 29

Two of the NAIA’s pre-season favorites start their seasons this weekend.

#4 Biola hosts Simpson today.They will then make a trip to Hawaii, playing Hawaii Pacific Feb. 2-3, and Hawaii-Hilo Feb. 4.

#5  Embry-Riddle opens their season in Lakeland, FL, at Southeastern, on Feb. 3.

Texas announces return of Alumni Game

AUSTIN, Texas — Longhorns baseball fans will have an opportunity to see some of their favorite Texas Exes in action as the annual Alumni Game returns to UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday, February 8.

Due to scheduling conflicts, the event was not held during the 2008 season and the 2007 edition was held at The Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
