UC Irvine Hosts Annual Alumni Weekend

The UC Irvine Baseball program will host its annual Alumni Weekend Feb. 5-7, 2009.

Kicking off the weekend will be the third annual Grip `Em & Rip `Em Golf Tournament, held at the Coyote Hills Golf Course in Fullerton, Calif. The golf tournament, held Thursday, Feb. 5, is a scramble format with baseball-themed, on-course contests and the first-ever helicopter ball drop. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 11:30 am followed by dinner and silent auction at the conclusion of play. The Grip `Em & Rip `Em Golf Tournament is the single largest fundraiser for the UC Irvine Baseball program each year.

Frank Damas joins the FIU baseball coaching staff after a successful stint as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Miami Dade College. With Damas on their staff from 2003 until 2008, MDC won four Southern Conference championships and posted a combined record of 202-70

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The UAB baseball program has compiled a challenging schedule for the 2009 season, featuring 34 chances for fans to see the Blazers at home.

The 56-game schedule includes a 24-game Conference USA slate. UAB will play 12 league contests at Young Memorial Field in addition to 22 non-conference home games.

The Blazers play three of the first four weekends at home, including a season-opening series with Big South foe Radford (Feb. 20-22). The early-season schedule also features home series against Presbyterian (Feb. 27-March 1), another Big South team, and Ivy League member Harvard (March 13-15).

Top 15 Valley League Hitters

All Things Valley League has put together a Top 15 of the best hitters in the league during the 2008 season. The list is led by Florida International’s Tyler Townsend who had an outstanding summer with Winchester. He finished the season with a .387 average with 12 homers and 36 RBI in only 42 games. He also stole 14 bases in 17 attempts. Brandon Sizemore of College of Charleston comes in the runners up spot. He had a .377 average with 10 homers and 34 RBI. The rest of the top 5 is filled out by Marcus Nidfiffer (Kentucky), Drew Johnson (San Francisco), and Mickey Wiswall (Boston College). Slow Week!

It has been a slow week around here as we go through the yearly lull around the holiday season. Many schools shut down around the new year and don’t put out too much information around the holidays. CBB Top 50 Countdown: Number 1 Stephen Strasburg

The CBB finishes our countdown today with our number 1 player in the country. After evaluating every player in the country, we decided to select  junior RHP Stephen Strasburg from San Diego State as the best player.

Stephen is a native of San Diego who attended West Hills High School in Santee California. He ended up playing three years of varsity baseball under Scott Hopgood. His senior season saw him have a tremendous ERA of 1.68 in 62.1 innings while striking out 74 batters. Read the rest of this entry »
