HOUSTON, Texas – Head baseball coach Jared Moon has announced the HBU Huskies baseball schedule for the upcoming 2009 season.

The schedule will see the Huskies spending most of their time on the road, with 12 home games on the schedule. HBU will play a total of 12 games against five NCAA Tournament teams from 2008.

Nolan Ryan, Scott Linebrink slated as special guests

SAN MARCOS – National Baseball Hall of Fame member and Texas Ranger President Nolan Ryan along with current Chicago White Sox pitcher and former Texas State Bobcat Scott Linebrink will highlight the Texas State Bobcats Diamond Club lead-off dinner program as the guest speakers at the inaugural fundraising event. In conjunction with the Bobcats baseball team, the Diamond Club will host its first-annual fundraiser Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Embassy Suites.

Greg Rohan leads Kent State on the field

Kent State Athletic Communications Assistant Mike Ashcraft wrote an outstanding article about Greg Rohan’s leadership on and off the field. Rohan was the 2008 MAC Player of the Year as a junior but decided to return to the Flashes for a final go around. Rohan was named as a Brooks Wallace Watch List last month with teammate Ben Klafczynski as they try to bring the Flashes back to the NCAA Tourney. Read the rest of this entry »

The College Baseball Blog continues our series of interviews with various head coaches around the nation. We recently had a chance to talk with Jim Toman of Liberty University. He is currently entering his second season with the Flames after spending the last 11 years on Ray Tanner’s staff. He spent seven years previously under Tanner at NC State. He had a successful first season with the Flames which saw him lead the team to the Big South Championship game. TULSA, Okla. – Oral Roberts University baseball coach Rob Walton announced the addition of Wes Davis as assistant coach of the Golden Eagles on Thursday. Davis joins ORU after spending the last four seasons as assistant coach at UT-Tyler.

NCAA’s preliminary vote approves baseball alumni contests after Feb.1; Proposal awaits ratification

Indianapolis, IN – The NCAA Legislative Council voted today to approve a proposal to allow alumni contests to be played any time after the first permissible practice date of the championship season without penalty. The proposal now awaits the NCAA Board of Directors’ ratification that could happen as soon as this Saturday, and would put Proposal 2008-74 into effect immediately.

HAMMOND – To say the 2009 Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team’s pitching staff has a tough act to follow is a bit of an understatement. The 2008 Lions claimed the Southland Conference team ERA title with a 4.26 mark (244 ER/516.0 IP), took the league’s team strikeout title with 481 punchouts and boasted the individual league champ in each category in Brent Varnado (3.33 ERA) and Wade Miley (119 K) en route to a 32-27 season and a trip to the SLC Tournament semifinals.

RICHMOND, Va. (January 15, 2009) – George Mason senior outfielder Scott Krieger was selected as the 2009 CAA baseball preseason Player of the Year in voting by the league’s head coaches.

Krieger batted .381 with 16 doubles, a school-record 21 homers and 60 RBI in 2008 and has already been named to preseason All-America teams selected by Collegiate Baseball and Ping! Baseball. Krieger earned second-team All-CAA honors a year ago and was a first-team all-conference pick as a sophomore after hitting .365 with 20 homers and 68 RBI. He also received CAA All-Tournament team accolades in 2008 after belting five homers and setting tournament records with 14 RBI and 32 total bases in four games. Krieger is on pace to become Mason’s career leader in several offensive categories.
