College Baseball: First day of Practice coming soon

With Sunday being the First day of February that must mean one thing- Not only is it Super Bowl Sunday, but it is the First Official day of College Baseball Spring Practice. Most of the teams will be hitting the Diamond to see where and what they need to do to get to Omaha. All of us here are really pleased with how the site is progressing. Make sure you come back as the season starts to get which teams are up and which teams are down.

Baseball Practice Starts Sunday

FORT WORTH, Texas – The 2009 baseball season gets underway on Sunday as the squad officially opens spring practice. The team will stretch at noon for its first practice in preparation for the start of the 2009 campaign. All practices are held at Lupton Stadium and free to the public.

The squad will also practice Monday through Wednesday before taking a day off on Thursday. Those practices are slated to begin at 2:15. On Friday the program will host its sixth annual Alumni Weekend. The team will hold the First Pitch Banquet at Ridgelea Country Club with former American League President Dr. Bobby Brown serving as this year’s guest speaker. On Saturday at 1 p.m. the team will get their first taste of game-action against another opponent as they take on the Alumni squad. Full Story

Preseason Practices Kick Off for the UCF Baseball Team Sunday

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – When the calendar turns to the month of February, the action on the UCF baseball field will heat up dramatically. The Knights will finally be able to hold their first team practice of the spring on Sunday at 1 p.m., as they will practice for close to three weeks before Opening Day on Feb. 20 vs. Virginia Commonwealth.

Practice No. 1 will include a scrimmage at approximately 2 p.m. and it will be open to the public. The Knights also will hold intra-squad games on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, while Mondays will be their off days. FULL STORY

Nevada Baseball Squad To Begin Practice Monday In Preparation For 2009 Season

Reno, Nev. – The University of Nevada baseball team will begin practice on Monday at Peccole Park in preparation for the 2009 season opener on February 20 in Phoenix, Ariz. The Wolf Pack open the season at the Phoenix Tournament playing two games on Friday, the first against Gonzaga followed by a night game with Missouri. Saturday the Pack square off once again with Gonzaga and play Missouri to end the opening weekend on Sunday. The home opener is slated for March 6 when Washington comes to Reno for a three-game series.

Returning for his 27th season as head coach of the Wolf Pack baseball progame will be Gary Powers. The longest tenured coach in the history of Nevada athletics, Powers has amassed a record of 795-621-4 in 26 seasons at Nevada and is just five wins from 800 in his career with the Pack. FULL STORY

Diamond Dogs Begin Preseason Practice On Super Bowl Sunday

STARKVILLE, Miss. – While the Cardinals and the Steelers are preparing to take the field for the NFL’s Super Bowl Sunday in Tampa, Fla., Mississippi State’s Baseball Bulldogs will be hitting the diamond to begin preseason practice at Dudy Noble Field.

John Cohen’s first Mississippi State baseball edition opens the February workouts Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. scrimmage game. State begins its 119th season of baseball Feb. 20-23, hosting North Florida and Northern Illinois in the inaugural BankFirst Baseball Challenge at Dudy Noble Field. State launches the new season Friday (Feb. 20) with a 6 p.m. game against Northern Illinois. In a Saturday twinbill, State tests north Florida at 12:30 p.m. and Northern Illinois at 4 p.m. and closes out the three-day Challenge Sunday with a 2:30 p.m. game with North Florida. FULL STORY

Jackets Begin Spring Practice Feb. 1

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech, ranked No. 12 in the preseason Collegiate Baseball poll, will hold its first official practice of the 2009 season this Sunday, Feb. 1. Practice will begin at 11 a.m. at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Tech is a consensus preseason top-25 team and returns 21 letterwinners from the 2008 squad that finished the season with a 41-21 record and an appearance in the championship game of the NCAA Athens Regional. The Yellow Jackets are ranked No. 13 in the preseason National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll, while Baseball America lists Tech at No. 20 in its preseason rankings.

UF Baseball To Open Team Practice On Sunday

Under the direction of second-year head coach Kevin O’Sullivan, the University of Florida baseball team will hold its first team practice and scrimmage on Sunday, Feb. 1, as preparations continue for the upcoming campaign. The full team workout is scheduled to start around 10 a.m. at McKethan Stadium and is open to the public. On Saturday, Feb. 14, there will be a “Meet the Team” autograph event held at 2 p.m. following the intra-squad scrimmage where the players will be on hand to sign the schedule poster.

“All of us are looking forward to having everyone on the field in one group,” O’Sullivan said. “With our season opener just over three weeks away, the players have been working hard in the weight room and during individual workouts to get ready. We will have some very good intra-team competition that should allow us to be well prepared for the season opener.” FULL STORY

Crimson Tide will also hold scrimmage Sunday afternoon as practice gets underway

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama baseball team opens practice this Sunday, Feb. 1, at Sewell-Thomas Stadium, the first official day of preseason practice according to NCAA rules.

The Crimson Tide has been holding individual drills and weight room workouts since January 12 in preparation for the first day of practice.

“We have been working since January 12 getting ready for this day,” Alabama head Coach Jim Wells said. “We have a lot of players back from last year and the trip to Cuba helped us make some personnel decisions. We are anxious to get started with the regular season three weeks away.” FULL STORY
