CBB Top 50 Countdown: Number 2 Grant Green (USC)

The CBB continues our countdown to the 2009 College Baseball season with the Top 50 players to watch in the season. We will be providing one player each day (Monday-Saturday) until we reach number 1. We continue our list today with junior shortstop Grant Green of Southern Cal.

Grant Green is from Anaheim Hills California where he attended Canyon High School. He had an outstanding career with Canyon as he hit over .400 his final three seasons of High School baseball. His sophomore season saw him named the 2004 Century League Rookie of the Year after hitting .430 with eight doubles and 22 RBI. He came back with an even better junior season where he hit .455 with three homers and 30 RBI. He was named to the 2005 US Junior National Team after the year where he .412 with six RBI and two stolen bases at the Pan-Am Championships. His senior campaign saw him continue to dominate pitching in Southern California as he hit .453 with four homers and 22 RBI. He picked up several awards including All-CIF Division I, Orange County Register and all-league first team honors.

Green made an immediate impact into the USC lineup in 2007 as he started every game for the Trojans. He batted .316 (72-for-228) on the season with 14 doubles, a school-record 10 triples, two home runs, 24 RBI and six stolen bases. Green picked up several awards for his freshman campaign including being named to the Rivals.com and Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America second teams while picking up the Pac-10 Conference Co-Freshman of the Year award. After the season was over, he made the trek to the Cape Cod Baseball League where he was a member of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. He batted .291 (37-for-127) with four home runs and 12 RBI. Baseball America named him the 18th best prospect in the league.

Green came back in 2008 with another strong season as he hit .390 (80-for-205) with 15 doubles, five triples, nine home runs, 10 stolen bases and 46 RBI. He was named to the All-Pac 10 team and Baseball America put him on the third-team All-American list. After the season, he returned to the Cape Cod League but played with the Chatham A’s this past summer. He batted .348 (56-for-161) with six home runs and 21 RBI. He was named the MVP of the CCBL All-Star game after hitting a game tying homer to deep center field in the bottom of the eigthth inning. Green is extremely impressive with his defense skills and is the best hitting shortstop in the nation right now. Green is ready to make the next step into the 2009 MLB Draft.
