CBB Top 50 Countdown: Number 4 Kyle Gibson (Missouri)

The CBB continues our countdown to the 2009 College Baseball season with the Top 50 players to watch in the season. We will be providing one player each day (Monday-Saturday) until we reach number 1. We continue our list today with junior RHP Kyle Gibson from Missouri.

Kyle Gibson came to the University of Missouri from Greenfield Central High School in Greenfield Indiana. He had a career record of 15-8 with an ERA of 1.18 while striking out 251 batters in four seasons. His senior campaign saw him go 8-6 with a 0.98 ERA while striking out 140 batters. He was named a 2006 Preseason High School All-American by Louisville Slugger.

Gibson’s freshman campaign saw him used primarily out of the bullpen where he had a team high 28 appearances (2 starts). His record was 8-3 with seven saves in 67.2 innings. He was dominate on the mound as he struck out 77 batters. After the season was over, he was named a Honorable Mention All-Big 12 member. He spent the summer of 2007 with the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League. He started in eight games where he had a 2-0 record with a 1.17 ERA. He was named to the 2007 CCBL All-Star game and Baseball America named him their third best prospect in the league for 2007.

Gibson backed up his solid freshman season with an equally impressive 2008 campaign. He finished the season with a 9-4 including 2 saves with a 3.84 ERA in 19 appearances (12 starts). He picked up 96 strikeouts in 86.2 innings while walking 23 batters. He was named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention for the second straight year. He spent the summer with the USA National Team where he saw action in 13 games (1 start) with a record of 5-0 and a ERA of 1.02.
