Binghamton grabs seven recruits for 2010

VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton baseball, the two-time reigning America East regular season champions, has landed seven high school seniors during the early signing period. Signing a National Letter of Intent to play at Binghamton in 2010 are pitchers Jay Lynch (Exton, Pa./East West Chester HS), Joseph Swindells (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield HS) and Hassan Evans (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian HS), infielders Jordon Smucker (Bird-in-Hand, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite HS) and Joel Stubbs (Norwich, Ontario/Delhi District Secondary School), outfielder Brett Roeske (Lloyd Neck, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor HS) and catcher Jamie Butler (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal).

“This is an extremely talented class of student-athletes,” 17th-year head coach Tim Sinicki said. “These seven young men all have the ability to impact our program immediately. It’s a real tribute to the amount of work and effort put forth by the entire coaching staff over the past months and for that I am very grateful.”

A capsule look at each player is below.

Jay Lynch (Fr., RHP, 6-2, 175 lbs.)
Went 5-2 with a 2.23 ERA in junior season at East West Chester High… recorded 39 strikeouts in 46 innings… one of only two pitchers named first team all-league… starting pitcher for All-Star Baseball Academy, which lost in the semifinals at the 80-team World Wood Bat Association Fall ’08 Championship in Jupiter, Fla…. rated an 8 out of 10 at ’08 Perfect Game Sunshine Northeast Showcase.

Joseph Swindells (Fr., RHP, 6-4, 195)

Led Mansfield High team in wins (2) and ERA (1.90)… posted 36 strikeouts in 48 innings.. walked only six… led American Legion team in wins, ERA and strikeouts and was named its top pitcher for second straight year… rated 9 out of 10 at ’08 Perfect Game Northeast Top Prospects Showcase… also named one of top 14 prospects out of more than 200 players at the same event.

Hassan Evans (Fr., P/OF, 6-1, 190)

Led Xaverian High team to second straight CHSAA title… in summer hit .334 for highly-competitive Brooklyn Bonnies organization… named Gold Glove Award winner for Bonnies.

Jordon Smucker (Fr., SS, 6-2, 175)

Cousin of former Bearcats’ standout shortstop Justin Smucker…team captain and MVP for Lancaster Mennonite High team… batted .413 and was first team all-section… in summer hit .417 for Elite Baseball team.

Joel Stubbs (Fr., Inf., 6-2, 185)

Starting infielder for Team Ontario provincial team that captured the gold medal at 17-under Canada Cup National Championship in Medicine Hat, Alberta… in summer hit .400 with seven doubles for Intercounty Terriers… helped team advance to semifinals of the 18-under Sandlott World Series… named “Top Hitter” on team… selected to participate in the prestigious Mizuno Junior Elite National Development Camp at the Rogers Center, home of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Brett Roeske (Fr., OF, 5-9, 145)

Second team All-Long Island outfielder who led Cold Spring Harbor High in average (.504), hits (46), runs (31) and stolen bases (25) in 25 games… team MVP and all-county selection… in summer hit .402 to lead the Long Island Tigers to the NABF World Series Championship… selected to NABF all-tournament team.

Jamie Butler (Fr., C, 5-11, 160)

Local recruit who starred at nearby Vestal High… first team all-conference catcher who hit .333 and led team in home runs (5) and RBI (25)… in summer played with highly-regarded Syracuse SportsZone Chiefs, named the second-best summer team in New York State and 31st in the country by Perfect Game… rated 8.5 out of 10 at ’07 Perfect Game Western New York Indoor State Showcase.

Sinicki, the America East Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2007, will bring his Bearcats into their season-opening series on February 20-21 at Dallas Baptist.
