LAS VEGAS, Nev. – FieldTurf and Cal Ripken Jr. announced the winners of the 2008 FieldTurf Awards on Tuesday at the MLB Winter Meetings in Las Vegas. Creighton head baseball coach Ed Servais was named the NCAA Division I-AA Coach of the Year for his work last season.

“Congratulations to this year’s FieldTurf Award recipients, the Rays, Coach Batseole, Coach Servais and Fresno State University,” Ripken said.

The FieldTurf Coach of the Year Awards recognize a coach’s dedication and hard work both on and off the field. The coaches that have been and will be selected for this award all exemplify outstanding leadership skills and enjoy well deserved success. Special attention is given to coaches who are able to significantly improve their team’s effort, performance and overall record from previous years along with coaches who enjoy success with young and inexperienced teams.

“This award is good recognition for our program, as well as our assistant coaches who work hard in developing our program each year,” Servais said.

The 2008 season marked Servais’ fifth with the Bluejays, as the team went 37-21. Defensively the team was third in the nation with a .976 fielding percentage. Since coming to Omaha, Servais’ teams have finished in the top 17 nationally in defense four of his five years, including a nation-best .982 mark in 2004.

In the last five years Creighton has compiled a .664 winning percentage (196-99), good for 22nd in the nation over that period.
