Six commit to Virginia Tech baseball in early signing period

The Virginia Tech baseball coaching staff announced on Wednesday the official signing of five players to National Letters of Intent for the 2009-10 school year, as well as the addition of one transfer from an SEC school.

The new signees scheduled to join the Hokies for the 2010 season include outfielder/first baseman Tyler Horan of Boston College High School in Middleboro, Mass., pitcher Joe Mantiply of Tunstall High School in Danville, Va., catcher Chad Morgan of Paul VI Catholic High School in Springfield, Va., pitcher/first baseman Patrick Scoggin of Douglas S. Freeman High School in Richmond, Va., and shortstop/pitcher Brent Zimmerman of Nova High School in Cooper City, Fla. Also joining Tech in 2010 will be shortstop Tim Smalling, a Raleigh, N.C., native who spent the past two seasons starting for the University of Arkansas.

Horan is a 6-foot-1, 220-pounder who was a Catholic Conference all-star last season as a junior for Coach Norm Walsh at Boston College High, a school which he led to the 2008 Division I state championship. He was also named to the Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic Team after hitting .376 with 16 stolen bases, 29 RBIs and 33 runs scored, while adding seven doubles, three triples and two home runs. As a sophomore in 2007, Horan helped the team to the South Sectional Division I Championship while batting .288 with four homers, five steals and 15 RBIs. Also an all-star running back in football, Horan has tallied 14 touchdowns throughout his first nine games this fall. FULL STORY

Coach Batesole signs seven to National Letters of Intent.

Fresno State baseball coach Mike Batesole has announced that seven student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period to attend Fresno State and play baseball. Aided by assistant coaches Matt Curtis and Pat Waer, coach Batesole’s sixth recruiting class includes five position players, one pitcher, and one two-way player.

The Bulldogs recruiting class is highlighted by three players from the Fresno Area, including Clay Cedarquist (Fowler HS, Fowler, Calif.), J.D. Salles (Clovis West HS, Fresno, Calif.) and Garrett Weber (Fresno City/Clovis HS, Clovis, Calif.) FULL STORY

Cal State Fullerton Baseball Signs 13 For 2010

Second-year head baseball coach Dave Serrano announced Friday that 13 high school seniors have signed National Letters of Intent to attend Cal State Fullerton for the 2009-10 academic year.

All 13 athletes reside in California and will be competing in their senior seasons at their respective high schools in the spring of 2009.

“I am ecstatic at the overall quality of the players Sergio Brown (recruiting coordinator), Greg Bergeron (assistant coach), and the rest of the staff have been able to assemble for the 2010 class during this early signing period,” Serrano said.

“The challenge ahead of us now is to see how many of them will be able to stick to their educational commitment as many of them may have the opportunity to play professionally out of high school. Our fingers are crossed.” FULL STORY

Austin Peay baseball adds Show-Me State southpaw Belew

A team which relies on strong pitching always needs good arms and Austin Peay State University’s baseball head coach Gary McClure has kept the hunt going, signing left-handed pitcher Alex Belew, of O’Fallon, Mo., to a national letter of intent.

The 6-2, 190-pound Belew completed his junior season last spring at Fort Zumwalt West High School where he compiled a 3-2 record with 37 strikeouts in 29.1 innings. During the summer, he posted a 15-1 record with a 1.38 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 95 innings with the St. Louis Pirates – a wood bat league squad coached by former Govs outfielder Rick Strickland. He was ranked as the No. 13 prospect in Missouri by Perfect Game USA. FULL STORY

Creighton Baseball Adds Three Recruits for 2009-10

The Creighton baseball team has announced it has received signed National Letters of Intent from three players for the 2009-10 season. Alex Staehely, Mark Winkelman and Kyle King have all agreed to play for the Bluejays, and will be eligible starting in the fall of 2009.

Staehely, who is from same the high school (Benet Academy) as former Creighton pitcher Marc Lewis, is rated as the fourth best shortstop in the state of Illinois by the Prep Baseball Report. Staehely becomes the second top ranked infielder Creighton has landed from the Chicago area in the past three years, joining Elliot Soto who was the #1 infielder from Illinois in 2007. Regarded as a smooth-fielding shortstop with arm strength, Staehely has also shown ability with the bat. At the plate he belted eight home runs, 11 doubles and drove in 36 runs, while also tallying 20 stolen bases as a junior. FULL STORY

Indiana State Baseball Lands 10 Recruits During Early Signing Period

The Indiana State University baseball team has landed 10 recruits during the early signing period this month including two from West Vigo High School and one from Rockville High School.

“We are really excited about this recruiting class,” Lindsay Meggs, Sycamore head baseball coach said. “I’d like to congratulate my assistant coaches (Tyler Herbst and T.J. Merritt) for landing what I consider to be our best recruiting class to date. It’s exciting to be in the hunt for the best high school baseball players that the state of Indiana has to offer.”

Rockville High School’s Steven Ball and West Vigo High School’s Jeremy Lucas and Jordan Pearson are three of the seven high school seniors signed by the Sycamores this month. Also signing with Indiana State from Indiana were Franklin Central High School’s Jake Hartley, Castle High School’s Robby Ort and Evansville Mater Dei’s Jake Weinzapfel. Tyler Browning of Mt. Carmel, Ill., also signed with the Sycamores. FULL STORY
