CINCINNATI – Over the weekend, the University of Cincinnati baseball team played Game 2 and Game 3 of its annual Red/Black World Series, with the Black Team taking both games by scores of 9-6 and 7-3, respectively.

GAME 2:

Junior Jamel Scott (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) single-handedly created the first run of the game for the Black Team. Scott drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the first inning, before stealing second and third base. With one out and Scott on third, junior Cameron Satterwhite (Liberty Township, Ohio/Moeller) lifted a sacrifice fly into right field scoring Scott and placing the Black Team in front, 1-0.

The Red Team quickly tied the game up in the second inning as junior Jim Jacquot (Belleville, Ill/Belleville East) belted a deep opposite field solo shot off of Fifth Third Arena.

In the bottom of the third inning, the combination of Scott and Satterwhite struck again, lifting the Black Team to a 2-1 lead. Scott got things started with a one-out single and then scored on a two-out double to centerfield by Satterwhite.

After a scoreless fourth inning, a three-run fifth inning for the Black Team upped its lead to 5-1. A double by freshman Kiley Jones (Louisville, Kentucky/Eastern), a walk by freshman Braden Kline (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw) and a walk by sophomore Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City), loaded the bases with two outs. With the bases loaded, Satterwhite delivered a bases-clearing double, his second of the game, widening the Black Team’s margin to four runs, 5-1.

In the bottom half of the fifth inning, freshmen Cramer Dethy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) and Dorian West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) smacked back-to-back one-out singles to put runners on first and second base. A walk by freshman B.J. Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) two batters later loaded the bases, bringing another freshman, T.J. Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) to the plate. Jones connected on a single to score Dethy and West, cutting the margin to two runs, 5-3.

A four-run sixth inning for the Black Team broke the game wide open, upping the score to 9-3. Sophomore Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) and junior Lance Durham (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) drilled back-to-back home runs, immediately widening the lead to 7-3. Sophomore Nick Rohlfs (Loveland, Ohio/Moeller) followed with a bases-empty triple, while another triple scored Rohlfs, and a ground out plated the fourth run of the frame.

The Red Team struck back in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring one run on two hits. Senior Mike Spina (Newberry, Fla./Newberry) led off the frame with a double. After a fly out, a walk by Jacquot put runners on first and second base with one out. A single by junior Beach Brooks (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven) allowed Spina to cross the plate, cutting the deficit to 9-4.

The Red Team scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough as the Black Team took Game 2, 9-6.

Junior Brian Garman (Wapakoneta, Ohio/Wapakoneta) earned the win for the Black Team, going 4.0 innings and giving up just one run on two hits. Junior Tyler Smith (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan) also went 4.0 innings for the Red Team, giving up two runs on two hits.

Satterwhite went 2-for-4 from the plate with four RBI to lead the Black Team, while T.J. Jones went 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Red Team.

GAME 3:

The Black Team won its third straight game in the Red/Black World Series with a 7-3 triumph on Sunday, Nov. 16. Redshirt junior Brian Sand (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was given a four-run cushion to work with and Sand gave up just one earned run on three hits to earn the win.

While Sand gave up just one hit in his first three innings of work, his teammates scored one run in the first inning and three runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. Satterwhite drew a two-out walk to get things started in the opening frame, before senior Tyler Goodro (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) drove Satterwhite home on a double, placing the Black Team in front, 1-0.

One inning later, Kline and Rohlfs drew back-to-back walks to begin the inning, before a Garman double plated Rohlfs. On the double by Garman, Rohlfs was thrown out at home plate, leaving Garman on second base. After a fly out, Scott reached base on a fielder’s choice, which moved Garman up ninety feet. Scott moved into scoring position by stealing second base, and both Garman and Scott scored on a single by Peters, extending the lead to 4-0.

The Red Team cut the lead in half in the fourth inning scoring two runs on two hits. Spina drew a one-out walk and moved to second base after Jacquot reached base on an error by the third baseman. A single by Brooks loaded the bases with two outs, before freshman Kendal Coleman (Hillsboro, Ohio/Hillsboro) drilled a two-run single into right field, cutting the Red Team deficit to 4-2.

Two Black Team hits and a Red Team error in the bottom of the fifth innings allowed the Black squad to score three runs, extending the margin to 7-2. Peters reached base on an error by the rightfielder and moved into scoring position by stealing second base. After a walk by Goodro placed runners on first and second base with two outs, back-to-back hits by Riddell and Durham plated Peters and Goodro.

The Red Team added a run in the seventh, but that was it as the Black Team defeated the Red Team, 7-3.

Peters and Durham drove in two runs apiece for the Black squad, while Coleman led the Red Team with two RBI.
