CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team kicked off its annual Red/Black World Series Wednesday evening with the Black Team defeating the Red Team in extra innings, 5-2. Freshman T.J. Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) went 2-for-4 from the plate, including a two-out, two-RBI triple in the eighth inning to secure the win for the Black squad.

Senior Michael Hill (Proctorville, Ohio/Fairland) got the start for the Black Team, while junior Andrew Burkett (Crystal Lake, Ill./Cary-Grove/Elgin CC) toed the rubber for the Red Team. Hill and Burkett each went 3.0 innings, giving up just one hit apiece, but the lone hit given up by Hill was a second-inning solo home run by junior Jim Jacquot (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East/Southwestern Illinois College) that placed the Red Team in front, 1-0.

Junior Lance Durham (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon/Kaskaskia CC) drew a bases empty one-out walk for the Black Team in fourth inning, which brought senior Cameron Satterwhite (Liberty Township, Ohio/Moeller/Indiana University) to the plate. Satterwhite belted a two-run home run over the left field fence, catapulting the Black Team into the lead, 2-1.

The Red Team took advantage of a Black Team miscue in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2. Freshman B.J. Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) and freshman Kendal Coleman (Hillsboro, Ohio/Hillsboro) earned back-to-back walks, placing runners on first and second base with one out. Junior Jamel Scott (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) followed with a ground ball to second base and as the Black Team tried to turn a double play, an errant throw allowed Willis to score, tying the game at 2-2.

The Red Team threatened in the top of the seventh and top of the eighth innings, but on both occassions, senior Jake Geglein (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) worked himself out of a jam, giving his team a shot to win the game in the bottom of the eighth inning.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, freshman Braden Kline (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw) hit a two-out single up the middle to keep the inning alive. Sophomore Nick Rohlfs (Loveland, Ohio/Moeller) followed with a single into centerfield, giving the Black Team runners on first and second base with two outs. T.J. Jones broke the 2-2 tie with a two-RBI triple into center field, and as Jones was heading towards third base, an errant throw from center field allowed Jones to cross home plate, making the final score, 5-2.

Geglein earned the win for the Black team, pitching 2.0 innings out of the bullpen. The Black Team held the Red Team to just two runs on two hits, while the Black Team scored five runs on six hits.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 14, at 4:30 p.m. Junior Brian Garman (Wapakoneta, Ohio/Wapakoneta) gets the start for the Black Team, while junior Tyler Smith (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan/Ohio Wesleyan) starts for the Red squad.
