The CBB continues our countdown to the 2009 College Baseball season with our Top 50 players to watch. We will be providing one player each day (Monday-Saturday) until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with Junior Matt Prokopowicz from Hofstra checking in at the 43rd spot in our countdown. He is a 6′0 205 pound third baseman out of Massapequa High School in Massapequa New York.

He started his freshman season by making an immediate impact on the playing field. He ended up finishing with a .416 average which was good enough for second in the CAA and 10th in the nation in 2007. He was named to the Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, and Ping! Baseball Freshmen All-America teams. The CAA named him the 2007 Rookie of the Year and to the All-Conference Second team in his first campaign.

He backed up that freshman campaign with a solid sophomore season where he again led Hofstra in hitting, homers and RBI. His average was .312 with eight homers and 39 RBI in 55 games. He received very little support from his teammates with a 19-36 record while going 7-23 in a very solid CAA. He ended up spending the summer with the Mankaro Moondogs in the Northwoods League. Matt struggled with the transition to the wood bat league where he only hit .211 with five extra base hits in 25 games.

We think that Matt will be able to adjust to a new coaching staff led by Patrick Anderson who replaces Chris Dotolo as the head coach. The new style of coaching should make Prokopowicz’s swing better and make him a more consistent hitter.
